And we are back!
Just like last week but newer!
Yes, it’s that special time of week again wherein I regale you with meditations on the sandwiches and potato chips that were. Wait, where you are going?! Lol I promise I’ll keep it short-ish, kinda.

Hot ‘n’ Crisp Sardine Sandwich
The 1,000 Fabulous Sandwiches
Rating: 6.5
Plus ups: Everything Bagel Pringles
Plussed up rating: 7
The “hot” in this sandwich was to come from way too much fresh horseradish. And while that did provide a little punch it was tamped down by the mayo a bit. The “crisp” part, nowhere to be found. So I plussed it up with Everything Bagel Pringles which, for a change, actually tasted pretty solid (see the Pringles review at the bottom of this to understand). Ended up ok but not making it again, thanks. Oh, and anytime I wear that sardine shirt, folks ask where I got it. Well, here.
Should you make it? Nah

Fried Savoury Sandwich (1870s)
Cookery and Domestic Economy
Tea Sandwich Rating: 6
Plus up: Dijon mustard and dill pickles
Plussed up rating: 7
The first of many mentions of mace this week (not sure how I let that happen), this sandwich was unusual for the technique wherein we fry the sandwich, crust it with parmesan cheese, then toast it. Lots of folks questioned if they even had parmesan in Scotland int he late 1800s. All I can say is that I didn’t write the cookbook. It was tasty, if not a little wasteful (had to cut it into a diamond shape). It definitely benefitted from the bright punch plus up of Dijon mustard and dill pickle.
Should you make it? Sure, but maybe skip the diamond shape part.

September Sandwich (early 2000s)
Fringe (TV show)
Rating: 3.5
Plus up: Melted sharp cheddar cheese
Plussed up rating: 4.5
Ok, a few things to correct up front. First, Fringe ran for 5 seasons. Second, the Observers (the character who ate this sandwich in the show) had almost no tastebuds so apparently that’s why he went all in on the spicy stuff. I could see this sandwich working with a better balance to be honest. Plussed it up by melting some cheddar cheese on which not only tasted good but also helped tamp things down a wee bit.
Probably my favorite thing about this sandwich is that some folks tagged the actor who played September in the show and he shared this on his Instagram Stories!

Should you make this? Yes, but get the balance right.

Egg and Shrimp Paste Sandwich Revisited (1910)
Every Woman’s Encyclopedia
Tea Sandwich Rating: 7.5
Plus up: Furikake
Plussed up rating: 8
When I first made this recipe last week, some folks suggested that the shrimp paste I made, which was just mashed up shrimp, was incorrect. And they were right! So this week I made a 1908 recipe for potted shrimp and it did change the flavor profile of the sandwich (and added a ton of butter). Sure enough, some folk commented this week that I used the wrong shrimp and that the would be whole. I’m not 100% sure that’s true given the recipe specifically called for one to boil then chop the shrimp fine. Then pound into a paste. Still, the revised version was tastier than last week’s and the plus up the Japanese condiment furiake help bring a little saltiness from the seaweed in it as well as nuttiness from the sesame seeds.
Should you make this? Nope!

Picnic Sandwich (1915)
“Dame Curtsey’s” Book of Salads, Sandwiches and Beverages
Rating: 7
Plus up: Melted Swiss cheese
Plussed up rating: 7.5
Yes, this sandwich combined ground up meats from two animals for some reason. Then mace entered the chat (again lol). Mace is pretty powerful stuff but this recipe was judicious and it the sandwich was quite tasty. Plussed it up with a little melted Swiss cheese which brought a little nuttiness that worked well with the mace.
Should you make it? Yeah, why not?

William’s Mom’s Sandwich
Our History
Rating: 4
Plus up: Chinese Five Spice | Irish Spice Bag Seasoning
Plussed up rating: 6 | 5
Some folks thought I was being pranked with this sandwich but I have to say I don’t think so. William provide a ton of great detail that someone pranking me wouldn’t have taken the time to create. I think his mom was familiar with fish, learned about strawberry and just put ‘em together without worrying too much about it. And it wasn’t great tbh. Both the Chinese Five Spice and the Irish Spice Bag Seasoning helped but the former made it much more palatable.
Should you make it? Noooo.

Macanese Pork Chop Bun (Macau)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 9
Plus up: NEWKS Blazin’ Raisin Hot Sauce
Plus up rating: 9.5
The marinade on this was fantastic! Then to have it grilled over charcoal and placed onto buttered and toasted Portuguese bread…man, so good. The more typical fried version would also be delicious for sure. Plussed it up with the fruity mid-range heat of NEWKS Blazin’ Raisin Hot Sauce which worked great with all the flavors in the sandwich. So good.
Should you make it? Yep!

In The Chips with Barry 🥔
Aaaand we’re back to a normal amount of potato chips per review. Although given how many chips keep showing up in my P.O. Box, probably gonna have to fire up the multi-review videos again.
Everything Bagel Pringles
Pringles can be hit or miss, not only between flavors, but between batches within the same flavor as well. So, the fact that these tasted good was a nice surprise.
Real Hand Cooked Roast Ox Potato Chips
Roast Ox flavor, you say? Hmm. Can’t say I’ve ever had ox in an form let alone roast but sure, why not?
Cajun Dill Gator-Tator Potato Chips
Tasty dill flavored chips though I’m still unclear on what makes them “Cajun.” And, no, there were no gator squeezin’s in these. Lol
Can It Sandwich?
Well, can it?
Well, that’s it for this week. If you’ve made it all the way down here, thanks! Also, next week will not only have sandwiches and potato chips but brace for impact as I’ll also be sharing an odd ice cream flavor I’ve dreamt up. Haven’t made it yet so it could suuuuck 🤞
Cheers,
Barry
