Charles Dickens Sandwich (1860-1870)
Author history?

Rating: 6 1/2
Plus ups: White onion and black pepper
Plussed up rating: 7

Leave to ole Charley Dickens to come with a tasty, nutricious, and healthy snack to have on a book tour. Some sliced hard boiled egg, a little anchovy fillets, and parsley - boom, you’re ready for a readin’. I leaned into the “old man lunch” aspect of it and added white onion and black pepper. Fun fact, “old man lunch” is what Christine calls it when I bust out a tin of smoked oysters and crackers to have for lunch on the weekends…omg I am an old man!

Orange and Deviled Ham Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches

Rating: 6
Plus up: Ground gloves and nutmeg
Plussed up rating: 7

Whenever I do sandwich recipe, I get at least a few comments asking what deviled ham is? Setting aside that it would’ve been just as easy to type that into Google and get an instant answer for free, I do use a homemade deviled ham based on this recipe. The paring of deviled ham and orange marmalade worked well even if it was a bit much. Plussed it up with some warm spice to give it that glazed ham vibe.

Should you make this? Yes but maybe as an appetizer or small bite.

Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich (recent history)
Turkey and The Wolf: Flavor Trippin’ in New Orleans (not an affiliate link)

Rating: 10
Plus up: None

Every year for my birthday, I want to make something epic. It just happens that for the past 4 years it’s been a sandwich recipe from Turkey and The Wolf: Flavor Trippin’ in New Orleans by Chef Mason Hereford. Right off the bat, know that Chef Mason Hereford and his crew are geniuses when it comes to flavor development. This sandwich is just the latest example. Between the pinapple habanero white BBQ sauce to the use of chicken base both to season the flour and season the steak after frying to the added fresh dill, this sandwich is bonkers good. You might be temtpted to leave off the fresh dill since it already has dill pickles. My friend, do not do that. It is THE thing the sends the entire sandwich over the top. This particular sandwich isn’t in the cookbook linked above but can be found here.

Should you make this? Oh yeah x 1000!

Peanut Butter Sandwich (1920s?)
70sDinnerParty post

Rating: 5
Plus up: Sriracha
Plussed up rating: 5 1/2

I think the only reason mustard was included with this sandwich is because maybe the recipe was published by Keen’s Mustard? Otherwise there’s no reason for it to join the peanut butter and dill pickle party already in progress. Add the sweet heat o’ sriracha which was nice.

Should you make this? No

Roast Pork Sandwich (1920)
The Calendar of Beverages and Sandwiches

Rating: 7
Plus up: Seasoned slice of tomato
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

Once again we find ourselves with a recipe call for chopped up meat instead of slices. My theory is the it was so any cut of roast pork could be used wherein if they called for slices, they would have to specify pork tenderloin, for example. It was pretty tasty with the sage and the boiled salad dressing (something I don’t often say about recipes that use boiled salad dressing) Adding a seasoned slice of sweet tomato seemed to unify it even more

Should you make it? Meh, if you want.

GG’s Sammich
Our History

Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Lay’s potato chip
Plussed up rating: 7

When I saw that this week’s sandwich of our history featured both peanut butter and bologna, I know it was going to be tasty. That combo just works. Honestly, it was the other ingredients that could’ve thrown a spanner in the works but they did not. Definitely felt like a great grandma sandwich. Even more so when plussed up with a plain Lay’s pototo chip.

Should you make this? Yeah, why not?

Irish Special (Ireland)
International Sandwich Sunday

Rating: 9
Minus down: Herr’s Cheddar and Horseradish potato chips
Minus down rating: 8

You’d think after doing this for a number of years, I’d know to leave well enough alone. Nope. This delicious, grilled ham, cheese, red onion, and tomato sandwich just delicious. And while the the idea of adding something a little sharp was not a bad one, mustard would’ve been a much better choice that the Herr’s Cheddar Horseradish potato chips as they just overpowered everything. Oh well, can’t win ‘em all.

Should you make it? Absolutely!

In The Chips with Barry 🥔

Marks & Spencer Chicken Curry Potato Chips

Finally starting to get to the bags I brought back from London from when I did Sandwiches of History: LIVE! there this past July. These were butter and had good curry flavor. All without chicken squeezin’s!

Zapp’s Big Cheezy Potato Chips

With a name like “Big Cheezy” (a not so clever play on the nickname for New Orleans, The Big Easy) I was expecting and explosion of cheese flavor. Not so much. Still, they were tasty so there’s that.

Norse Roots Berzerker Spicy All-Seasoned Potato Chips

There are several potato chips companies out there cooking potatoes in beef tallow. And they are delicious. For the record, I am not anti-seed oil, just here for the flavor. Well, Norse Roots has figure out how to leverage the richness of beef tallow but bring flavors that stand on their own like this spicy version of an All Dressed.
