Yes, welcome to the second to last Sandwiches of History recap post/email…of 2025. Happy last night of Hanukkah, somewhat early Merry Christmas, and Happy Kwanzaa.

I’ll be posting my annual recap videos starting the day after Christmas through New Year’s Day then it’s back to the sandwiching action.

No chips this week as I was busy getting ready for the holidays. I will have one more week of chips in 2025 next week. What I do have, is sandwiches. Seven of ‘em to be exact.

It is kind of odd that I hadn’t had a Lobster Roll before. My dad worked on a lobster boat as teen and did not care for them at all. So it was never a thing in our house. At any rate both the Maine (or folks outside of the Northeast might call it, New Englad) version was light and tasty with it’s mayonnaise base. But I have to admit, the buttery Connecticut kind of did it for me a little more. Naturally, when I see butter I think caper and that was a solid plus up. The chips with the mayonnaise was also good but not quite as impactful. Folks suggested salt and vinegar flavor chips would be better and I have to agree.

Should you make it? It’s a splurge but yes.

Banana and Liverwurst Sandwich (1931)

Having just tried, and enjoyed, liverwurst for the first time a week prior, I wanted to keep an open mind on this. But mashing the liverwurst with a banana and ketchup wasn’t just texturally off-putting but it didn’t taste great either. Ugh.

Talk about a palate cleanser after the liverwurst fiasco. Tart apple with cream cheese and nutmeg was a lovely departure. Plussed it up with the brightness of just a smidge of lemon juice. Tasty stuff.

I watch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert so whenever a celebrity takes the Colbert Questionert of which the first question is “What’s the best sandwich?,” I know if they answer honestly with something unique that I’m gonna have to do it. Well, between the day job and run up to leaving town for the holidays, I was planning on skipping this one. Then I saw another video wherein Nicole LeeAnne did a version suggested by her followers. So at the lat minute I decided to both. And you can tell by the production quality and brain farts, it was a rushed job 🤦‍♂️ Anyway, the original PB&J with sour cream and onion pototo chips was good but the version with apricot jam and BBQ flavored potato chips was soooooo very good! Plussed up the former with some chili powder which improved things a bit. But the latter one didn’t really need anything.

Quick update, my man Josh says he’s got two interviews lined up as a result of the video being shared! Go get ‘em Josh! I thought the bacon would do more heavy lifting with this but according Josh, not so much. First of yes, I recorded this before I saw Josh’s video lol. This was notable for the fact that the middle layer of bread was toast not unlike the Toast Sandwich of 1861. But it had so much more going for it that the Miracle Whip wasn’t even a problem flavor-wise. I think it would be tasty to revisit with some more flavorful cheese. Was thinking the same thing Josh was in the previous video when it came to plus ups. I wanted something bright to contrast with the bread and ingredients this cornichons and Dijon mustard.

Should you make it? Yeah, why not?

Not being the biggest fan of ketchup, I was a little leery of having to use it in a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. But, it was actually pretty good. Again, I sought out some contrast to all the richness but this time opted to plus it up with pickled pepperoncini. Nice.
