Late but not stale
🥪 + 🥔
Well, the Dublin and London Sandwiches of History: LIVE! shows were a lot of fun. The jet lag, less so lol. My plane was to set this up and send on the 11 hour plane ride home on Tuesday (if I had worked on it in London that would’ve meant more time hanging out in a hotel room editing and not seeing London). The only hitch in the giddyup? Once we were airborne they announced that the wifi wasn’t operational on that plane. D’oh! So here it is over a two days later than when I normally send it. Sorry about that. Full week of sandwiches and chips so let’s get into it shall we?

Cheepicknut Sandwich
1,001 Sandwich
Rating: 4
Plus ups: Black pepper and mustard powder
Plussed up rating: 5 1/2
It probably comes as no surprise that the combo of cottage cheese, pickle, and nuts between buttered bread is not all that interesting. This is one of those recipes that really felt like a “shoot, we’ve got to get to 1,001 recipes!” kind of thing. Plussed it up with two items that brought a little bite, black pepper and mustard powder. But yeah, not gonna make this again.

Sandwich Filling Number 3 (1931)
The White Lily Flour Cook Book
Rating: 6
Plus up: Zhoug sauce
Plussed up rating: 7
I’d have thought that ham + horseradish + cream might have equaled flavor but the amount of fresh horseradish called for was clearly not enough. So it just ended up being cream moistened ham (a phrase I hope to never write again lol). The Zhoug Sauce I used, which is Yemini hot sauce with cilantro, parsley, and garlic) for the plus up was from Trader Joe’s but this recipe is easy and I’ve made it many, many times. Highly recommend that (as opposed to the original sandwich).

The Diablo
Sandwiches from movies and TV
Rating: 8
Plus up: Melted smoked cheddar cheese | Xxtra Hot Flamin’ Hot Cheeetos
Plussed up ratings: 9 | 8 1/2
Lots and lots of folks are certain that this recipe was not correct. Everything from pulled pork to smoked brisket was brought up. The thing is, this sandwich was from a fictional movie and the there never was a recipe from the script. So, yeah, could be either of those. Could just as easily been ground beef given that it was the late 70s. At any rate, this was a tasty, somewhat spicy, Sloppy Joe-esque kind of sandwich. Decided to try two plus ups - melty smoked cheddar and Xxtra Hot Flamin’ Hot Cheeetos. Both worked really well but I have to give the edge to the cheese version.

Browned Sandwich (1890)
The Frontier (newspaper)
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Ayoh! Foods Miso Mayo
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
When I saw the name and date of the newspaper this recipe was from I was honestly expecting it to be more barebones. Not that chopped meat between essentially unseasoned French Toast is all that schmancy but still. With no binder in the original, I went ahead added some savory miso mayo which helped keep things together and bring some flavor to the party.

Coca-Cola Chicken Sandwich Sandwich
Recent history?
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Chopped scallion greens
Plussed up rating: 7
The combo of Coca-Cola, ginger, and Chinese five spice powder actually sounded pretty good. And, as many folks pointed out, had it been reduced to a glaze or used as braising liquid for the chicken, it might have had more of an impact. I think had the recipe called for one of those techniques it would’ve rated higher. It was still tasty with the sweet tanginess of the honey mustard though.

Sand-Rich
Our History
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Seasoned slice of tomato and pepperoncini
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
The original sandwich with the sharp Dijon mustard, buttery Jarlesberg Swiss cheese, and vegetal romaine lettuce was tasty but it felt like it needed just a little bit more. So, I plussed it up with a seasoned slice of tomato and some pepperoncini to give it a nice little pickley pop.

Frajolaki (Canada)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Seasoned slice of tomato and kalamata olives
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
I know what you’re thinking, didn’t I just say that marinating wasn’t my favorite way to flavor meat? Yes, yes I did. But, methinks that there were two things that work in that method’s favor this time. First, I think the acid of this recipe was higher than the in the marinade for the Coca-cola Chicken Sandwich. And second, the chicken thighs are thinner than breast so the surface area to inner meat area is lower resulting in more flavor. Either way this creation out of the Greek diners of Saskatchewan was flavorful. Especially with tzatziki and pickled red onions. A little seasoned tomato and briny kalamata olives really rounded out the flavors nicely.

In The Chips with Barry 🥪
Kettle Brand Chili Crisp potato chips
Kettle Brand is normally quite adept at nailing interesting and complex flavors. While these were tasty, it didn’t quite align with the flavor profile of any chili crisp I’ve had.
Herr’s Special Hot Stromboli potato chips
Theses were tasty with hints at Italian seasoning. I’ve never had a Special Hot Stromboli before though so not sure if they nailed the flavor or not tbh.
John Wm. Macy Asiago and Cheddar crips
Not a potato nor tortilla chip. No this was essentially bite sized version of their famous cheese straws. And I am very ok with that.
Alrighty, then. That’s a wrap on last week. See you next week!
Cheers,
Barry
