Beef Sandwich Number 2 (1905
Salads, Sandwiches, and Savouries
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Chopped chives | Caraway seeds
Plussed up rating: 6 | 6 1/2
This was a tasty little number. Some folks said that my original score was too low. And, in retrospect, I have to agree. I think you could easily add a point to each. The sandwich on it’s own with the horseradish, roast beef, and tomato was nice. The chive plus up was good though not mind-blowing. The Beef On Weck inspired caraway seed plus was very tasty. Highly recommend.

Hot Sandwich (1974)
Centennial Cook Book
Rating: 5
Plus up: Charcoal grilled broccoli rabe and melted Swiss cheese
Plussed up rating: 7
Boy, it was fun to see how many people got rankled by the first half of this video. Mainly because they didn’t realize that the first half was an April Fool’s version and that the real episode was the second half. But, about this sandwich. It was kinda dumb. I mean, dipping a hamburger bun in an egg/milk mixture made no sense as it couldn’t really absorb into the bun. Added some charcoal grilled broccoli rabe for a little bitterness and some nutty Swiss cheese melted under the broiler as plus ups. Definitely made it more interesing

Officer Bill Gannon Sandwich (1967)
Dragnet TV show
Rating: 9
Plus up: None
Before we get into it, yes I screwed up the year. It should have been 1967 not 1952. Pobody’s nerfect. When I listened to the laundry list of ingredients in this sandwich I though it was going to be awful. But, I go into these things with an open mind because you never know. Sure enough, this was delicious! And the one ingredient that sounded like it didn’t belong, peanut butter, was actually the one that brought it all together. Mind blown.

Surprise Sandwich (1922)
Metropolitan Methodist Episcopal Cook Book
Rating: 7
Plus up: Freshly grated ginger | Chinese Five Spice | Freshly grated ginger and Chinese Five Spice
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2 | 7/12 | 8
Not sure why this was named the Surprise Sandwich but hard to wrong with cream cheese, orange marmalade, and pecans. Added a little zest with some freshly grated ginger and a little depth with the warmth of Chinese Five Spice (something about that blend with it’s star anise goes so well with orange)

Chilaly Sandwich (1927)
Good Meals and How To Prepare Them
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Pickled jalapeños
Plussed up rating: 8
As you know, I think the combo of peanut butter and cheese works. Well, in this instance they upgraded the cheese to pimento cheese and added in chopped parsley. The parsley was odd but not off-putting. Decided to plus it up with a hot sauce that has a nice sweetness to it.

Bentley Special
our history
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Capers
Plussed up rating: 8
When Luca wrote in with this sandwich I wasn’t sure. It did sound like of like a fever dream but then again, he said that his sister would make this for him after his chemotherapy session. In that light it makes a ton sense. You’ve got your savory ramen, tangy mature cheddar cheese, the delicious combo of sautéed mushrooms and onions, the sweetness of fried tomatoes, smoky bacon and peppery arugula. It was not only tasty but a great way to pack in the calories. I opted to brighten it a little with capers.

Pakistani Club Sandwich (Pakistan)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 10
Plus up: None
I had never heard of this sandwich until someone mentioned it in a comment on last week’s International Sandwich Sunday. And man, I am glad they did. This was savory and delicious. Someone pointed out that perhaps mixing in the pan juices with the shredded chicken would have been tasty. Totally agree though it may have made the mayo a bit runny. I will definitely make this again but will probably us chicken thighs instead. This is the recipe I followed.

In The Chips withBarry!
Uncle Chipps Spicy Treat potato chips
All the flavor of green chutney from India with none of the heat. Which is ironic given the flavor on the bag is “Spicy Treat.” Still, these were not to shabby.
Keya’s Bombay Spice potato chips
Man, these were a flavor explosion. And with an ingredient list packed full of actual spices as opposed a lot of mass manufactured chips.
Kurkure Green Chutney Style Snacks
Just how it was funny that the first chips of the week had ‘spicy’ in the name but weren’t spicy, here we had a snack that made no promise of heat but brought it. Big time. And they delivered on the flavor of green chutney as well.
Can It Sandwich?
Well can it?
Back next week with seven more sandwiches to recap and more In The Chips with Barry. Thank you for watching, reading, and subscribing to Sandwiches of History!
Cheers,
