Monday, Monday...

Hopefully a little something to make the week's start better

Monday, Monday...

Sending this out as we fly out to do another four dates of Sandwiches of History: LIVE! Going to be dropping a sizzle reel on Tuesday to y’all a better feel for just what the heck the live show is anyway. And on Friday, we’re going to be announcing eight more cities starting in March. Woot!

And, of course, less than a week before TikTok appears headed for shutdown here in the United States. One the one hand, watching over 314,000 followers built up over the course of years go away suddenly is a bummer. Then again, TikTok hasn’t exactly been great at showing those folks by videos. I’d say on average maybe 10,000 people see one of my daily vids there. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Whadda ya gonna do, right? I do feel bad for folks who were able to make a go of it and will now have that income cut off thought. Onward we go.

The Sandwiches of the Week 🥪

Stroganoff Steak Sandwich (1974)
Better Homes and Gardens’ After Work Cook Book/Our History

Rating: 8 1/2
Plus up: Chopped chives
Plussed up rating: 9

You know, this is one of those recipes that makes you think that not all recipes from the 1970s are terrible. The marinated flank steak was tasty from the marinade though I’d of preferred it grilled over charcoal. One thing that seemed to be missing was mushrooms but what do I know. That would’ve a good plus up along with the chives. Next time.

Asparagus Sandwich (1914)
Neighborhood Cook Book

Rating: 5
Plus up: Dry cured olives
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2

This was clearly a tea sandwich or perhaps one served as part of a multi-course meal. A lot of folks asked if I cooked the asparagus before pureeing with the mayonnaise. I did not as the recipe did not say to. Nor did it call for canned asparagus. I do think it would markedly better were the asparagus lightly grilled in advance. A little lemon zest would be nice as well but I live the salty, dry cured olives.

Peanut Butter, Applesauce, and Chicken Spread Sandwich (1973)
Underwood Chicken Spread TV Commercial

Rating: 5
Plus up: Sriracha
Plussed up rating: 6

Yeah, I kinda knew this was going to be a challenge. Mainly due to the consistency and ingredients in the chicken spread. I grew eating and enjoying Underwood Deviled Ham but somehow managed to avoid the chicken spread. I can see the flavors of chicken, peanut butter, and apple working well together so this might be a future Recipe Remix.

Roquefort Sandwich (1912)
The Chafing-Dish Cook Book

Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Thinly sliced apple and chopped walnuts
Plussed up rating: 8 - 8/12

Not gonna lie, I dug this sandwich. Roquefort on it’s own is a tasty blue cheese. But adding a little brandy and Tabasco just made it much more complex and tasty. Went full-on “cheese plate” mode for the plus ups by adding sliced apples and walnuts. Nice.

Sandwich Filling (1931)
White Lily Flour Cook Book

Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Chinese Five Spice + Grilled Cheese Treatment™
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

Back-to-back cheese plate themed sandwiches? Who’s running this show? Lol. Of all the sandwich recipes to have a generic name it had to be one featuring shredded mild cheddar and orange marmalade. It was a tasty combo deserving of a name already. The nuttiness of the whole wheat bread also played a nice part in it. But plussed with warm spices of Chinese Five Spice and melted via the Grilled Cheese Treatment™ (I don’t actually have a trademark, it just amuses me, sorry) really made it sing.

Meat Salad Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches

Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Chin-su Vietnamese Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2

The name Meat Salad Sandwich doesn’t exactly inspire, does it? Plus we had to make what I considered to be a super tangy boiled dressing. Yet when combined with all natural peanut butter, and shredded carrot, the dressing mellowed out nicely. Was very much tempted to go the Thai route with sriracha and cilantro but decided go nearby with the Vietnamese hot sauce Chin-su which is spicy but a bit more garlicky.

Cheese Roll (New Zealand)
International Sandwich Sunday

Rating: 7
Plus up: Pickled jalapeños
Plussed up rating: 8

A lot of international sandwiches require a fair amount of work. But in the end they deliver on flavor. Well, this week we had one that was not complex but still delivered some rather nice flavor. And while cheesy sauce with onion soup mix rolled up in buttered bread and baked ain’t exactly gourmet it was tasty. Plussed it up with a little pickled jalapeño for a little heat and acidic contrast.

In The Chips with Barry 🥔

Lay’s Turkey Dinner potato chips (Canada)

Man were these ever tasty. The flavors of turkey dinner that revealed themselves one after the other - stuffing, turkey, gravy. So good.

H-E-B Korean BBQ potato chips (USA)

Well, this was a little embarrassing. When Cristina was kind enough to offer up these chips I said yes without doing a simple search on my own YouTube channel 🤦‍♂️. But it had been over year so I figure why not revisit them. Just like last time they did not disappoint.

Tikka Masala potato chips (Canada)

I’m told these were sold in the U.S. this summer. I am bummed I missed em because there were delicious. Highly recommend if you see ‘em, buy ‘em. This made for the second chip this week were the flavor was so good it made me forget how much I dislike the thinness of Lay’s potato chips. Now, that’s something.

Can It Sandwich?

As much as all three flavors this week were bold, somehow they all came together in one tasty combo sandwich. Go figure.
