Recapaloozafest
Ok, that might be a bit much
Well, the mini leg of Sandwiches of History: LIVE! has wrapped. We had some great audiences in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Boston (where I got to tour America’s Test Kitchen and had Julia Collin Davison as my guest star on stage!) We were supposed to do a show in New Orleans but due to a snowstorm of all things, we had to re-schedule it to May 28th. Was not expecting that. Anyway, off for February then back on on the road for shows in San Diego, Nashville, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Cincinnati, Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta. Going to announce some more shows in late April and late May but can’t share those just yet.

Ham Walnutwich (1965)
The 1,000 Fabulous Sandwiches
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Clove, nutmeg, and powdered sugar
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
This was not too shabby. Turns out ham and walnuts make for a tasty pairing. I plussed it up with a trick I learned from another olden tymee recipe - using spices and sugar to make it taste more like a glazed ham. And it worked! Pickles would’ve been a nice plus up too.

Raisin and Nut Sandwich (1930)
PET Recipes
Rating: 4
Plus up: Cinnamon
Plussed up rating: 5
This sandwich baffled me a bit. Evaporated milk is milk that has had 60% of the liquid removed. The cans last on shelves for eon and all one has to do is add water back in you and boom, you’ve got milk. Still, it is very much a liquid so I am not sure why PET thought it would make for good sandwich filling. I mean other than to sell more PET Milk, that is. Flavor-wise it was tasty but what a mess.

Avocado Salad Sandwich (1964)
The Sandwich Book
Rating: 3 1/2
Plus up: Tapatío hot sauce
Plussed up rating: 5
I love avocado. So to find a recipe that called for us to thin the avocado out with chili sauce and mayonnaise was kinda heartbreaking. It wasn’t horrible by why would you do that? Plussed it up with some Tapatío hot sauce which helped but yeah, not making this one again.

Favorite Sandwich (1927)
Good Meals and How To Prepare Them
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Pepperoncini
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
A tuna salad sandwich that wasn’t bad but a bit boring (despited two different kinds of bell peppers). Plussed it up with some pepperoncini which really livened things up (as they usually do).

Peanut Butter and Tomato Sandwich (1938)
The Settlement Cook Book
Rating: 6
Plus up: Thaiger Thai Chili Crisp
Plussed up rating: 7
I was not expecting to like this sandwich. I didn’t think I’d hate either but the idea of tomato and peanut butter together had never crossed my mind. Turns out, it was pretty tasty! I want to re-try this with a summer heirloom tomato. Plussed it up with a Thai chili crisp that apparently isn’t sold online that had cinnamon and star anise. Which went really well with both ingredients.

Pepper Jam Cheese
1,001 Sandwiches
Rating: 8
Plus up: Honeycrisp apple
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
Man, when the filling for this sandwich was cooking I thought it was going taste entirely of ground mace. That’s because it was THE dominant smell. But it mellowed out nicely making for a tasty pepper jam. Christine had the great idea to plus it up with a slice of honeycrisp apple which was fantastic. As smear of cream cheese would’ve also been great.

Gibna Baida Sandwich (Sudan)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 8 1/2
Plus up: None
This was a delightful vegetarian sandwich that was a bit like a mashup of Greek and Mexican cuisines. Per the recipe I followed, I used feta as I couldn’t get the Gibna Baida (cheese). It so tasty that I opted not to plus it up. I thought it was balanced and tasty all on it’s own.
