Egyptian Ham Sandwich (1920)
The Calendar of Beverages and Sandwiches

Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Dill pickles
Plussed up rating: 6

Huzzah for exoticism! Yes, the poorly named Egyptian Ham Sandwich was just kind of there. Ham is always tasty but the seasoning just got lost. Perked things up with some nice dill pickles. Better, but wouldn’t make it again.

Sally Gasco Tuna Rarebit (1950)
Let’s Make a Sandwich”

Rating: 7
Plus up: Salt-free corn tortilla chips
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

Finally got around to this video which seems to surface every few months online. It was definitely better than I thought it would be but didn’t blow me away. The tortilla chips brought and texture and flavor to the party.

Banana Sandwich (1922)
Gold Medal Sandwich Book

Rating: 8
Plus up: Dark chocolate
Plussed up rating: 9

This sandwich was truly unlike any banana sandwich I’d done before. Banana mashed up with hard boiled egg yolks and chopped up bacon. The sweetness of the banana made it such all the egg yolks brought to the party was richness. So naturally, banana + bacon = dark chocolate plus up, right? So tasty!

Recipe Remix: Shrimp Sandwich (1957/2024)
Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook

Rating: 8
Plus up: Lemon juice
Plussed up rating: 9

Thought I’d try something new and crack open my own cookbook to share a Recipe Remix on a 1957 Shrimp Sandwich. The original, also in the book, is tasty as well. It features a curry butter. I used the same idea but took it in more of an east coast pool day direction by making some Old Bay butter and adding potato chips.

Chicken Sandwich (1937)
Household Recipe Book

Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: All Purpose seasoning blend
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2

The original sandwich was fine - chicken, mayonnaise, and pickles. Felt it needed some complexity and added some All Purpose seasoning (which I highly recommend you have on hand as it goes so well with poultry). Turned it into a tasty little number.

Cream Cheese and Pineapple Sandwich
The Calendar of Beverages and Sandwiches

Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Tajín
Plussed up rating: 9

Another tea/snack sandwich that, all on it’s own was tasty. Cream cheese and pineapple with a little salt. Only way to make that better was to add some acidity. Which was delivered courtesy of Tajín.

Cheese and Onion Cob (England)
International Sandwich Sunday

Rating: 7 flavor-wise
Plus up: HP Sauce | Old Speckled Hen Pale Ale
Plussed up ratings: 7 1/2 | 8

Like the Sally Gasco Tuna Rarebit, this has been on my to do list for far too long. When I first saw a picture of the Cheese and Onion Cob I thought it was a stunt. Turns out, nope. Some people in the middle of England do eat these after a few pints. The flavor of the cheese and white onion on a buttered roll was solid. But man, what a mouthful. Plussed it up with the sweet/tangy HP sauce and, of course, an Old Speckled Hen Pale Ale all the way from the UK.

In The Chips withBarry!

S’noods Rigatoni Basil Pomodoro

I dig that they went out of their way to make these formed chips look like pasta. The flavor and the crunch were solid too.

Utz Red Hot Potato Crisps

You know, if you’re gonna have flames on the bag, the chips inside should be scorching. Alas, while these were generically spicy, they weren’t scorching. Good enough flavor if not a little thin.

Yamayoshi Rich Butter Potato Chips

There was no way these weren’t going to be great. Butter with a back note of soy sauce equals umami bomb of deliciousness.

Can It Sandwich?

No surprise here, all three can sandwich. But could they sandwich together in one go? Watch to find out!

That’s it for last week. Thanks again for watching, reading, and subscribing to Sandwiches of History! See you next week!

Cheers,
