Sandwich Week in Review
These were the sandwiches that defined an era. A very short era. One week, specifically.

Usually, in the course of a week, there is at least one clunker of a sandwich. But not this week. Don’t get m wrong, they weren’t all home runs either. But none came even close to being binned. It doesn’t happen often so I’m gonna take the win.

Hawawshi (Egypt)
International Sandwich Sunday
Original rating: 9.75
Plus up: Tahini sauce
Plussed up rating: 10
This one was ridiculously delicious right out of the gate. Had I not made the tahini sauce at the recommendation of the recipe author, I’d of rated it a 10. But that sauce brought some other elements that just leveled everything up. If you didn’t wan to use beef you could use ground turkey or even lentils (although you may want to add a little fat of some kind to the lentils as the beed is a 90/10 grind). Here is the recipe for the Hawawshi and here is the recipe for the tahini sauce. These are easy to make so I highly recommend you give it a go.

Bean Club Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Original rating: 7
Plus up: Calabrian chile powder
Plussed up rating: 8
Not gonna lie, when I read the name of this sandwich I thought it was going to suuuuuck. I’m not British and therefore did not grow up eating beans on toast. So to me it was a bit of an odd concept. But the beans were not alone as Russian dressing, sweet pickles, bacon, and minced cress joined the party. The result was a smoky, tangy, sweet bean sandwich on nutty, toasted whole wheat bread. Not too shabs. Added a little heat because, well, I’m me. Can’t stop, won’t stop. Lol.

Salmon Sandwich (1927)
Household Searchlight Recipe Book
Original rating: 6
Plus up: Way too much black pepper
Plussed up rating: 7.5
I’ve seen a few recipes that call for mashed potatoes as filling for sandwiches but never as part of an ensemble cast until this one. And that it was used with canned red salmon was even more intriguing. But the dill pickles brought brightness, the green pepper brought crunch and a vegetal note, and the mayonnaise brought richness. All of which worked with both the salmon and mashed potatoes. And since both of those things play well with black pepper, I plussed it up with an inordinate amount. No regerts.

Crab and Anchovy Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Original rating: 7.5
Plus up: Sea Witch Pepper Potion Datil and Mango (not an affiliate link)
Plussed up rating: 9
This a nice little seafood sandwich. The combo of crab and tinned anchovies paired really well with pimentos, olives, and celery. Plussing it up with that fruity, complex Sea Witch Pepper Potion just made it sing.

Football Sandwich (1974) with Prescott Vanmeyer III (unemployed wine guy)
Williams’ Sandwich Recipes
Original rating: 7
Plus up: Sliced cherry tomatoes and black pepper
Plussed up rating: 9
Yes, Guest Host Friday is back! This week we had Prescott Vanmeyer III more familiarly known as the Unemployed Wine Guy. I’ve been a fan of his vids for a couple of years now, so I was stoke that he agreed to do a guest host spot. And he leaned into it creating, essentially, a cooking show around the sandwich. Speaking of, roast beef with a rich horseradish cream? Um, yeah. I need to make this for myself.

Bennett’s Lunch Sandwich (1900s)
Bennett’s Lunch
Original rating: 7.5
Plus up: Melted hickory smoked cheddar cheese and Grillo’s Pickles Pickle de Gallo (not an affiliate link)
Plussed up rating: 10
When I read this recipe I was cautiously pessimistic. I mean, boiling beef for hours did not sound like a great start. Yet, the London broil benefitted from that greatly. Plus toasting the flour and using the leftover stock that came from boiling the beef made for a surprisingly tasty, savory gravy. Plussed up with some smokey cheddar and Grillo’s Pickle de Gallo and it was just a wonderful confluence of flavors. Were I to make this again, my instinct would be to cook the meat sous vide. You wouldn’t get as much “stock” but what you’d get would be more concentrated.
