Honey Raisin Sandwich (1937)
The Calendar of Beverages and Sandwiches

Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Garam Masala
Plussed up rating: 8

Hard to go wrong with the combination of honey, nuts, and raisins…unless you don’t like of those ingredients. But I decided I wanted a little more complexity by plussing it up with some Garam Masala seasoning blend. And I was thusly rewared.

Salmon Rarebit (1901)
Recherché Side Dishes

Rating: 7
Plus up: San Juan Island Salt and Pepper
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

A couple folks asked if tartar sauce from 1901 was similar to what we have today. Much to my surprise it was although modern jarred ones do have some sugar in them. This combo of boiled salmon (the recipe said to boil it but did so gently and quickly as to not dry it out) with the tartar sauce and lettuce was lovely. It just need a little seasoning this the simple plus up.

Shrimp Boat Sandwich (1959)
The Call newspaper

Rating: 7
Plus up: Pickled jalapeño slices
Plussed up rating: 8

For being named the Shrimp Boat Sandwich this recipe had almost as much if not more tuna. Go figure. Still, all combined it was pretty tasty. Perked things up with the pickley heat of sliced pickled jalapeños.

Recipe Remix: Ginger Sandwich (1912/2024)
Sandwiches of History: The Cookbook

The original Ginger Sandwich featured orange marmalade and freshly grated ginger which was definitely tasty (it’s why I included in my cookbook). For the Recipe Remix I kept the namesake ginger but swapped in a quick lemon curd. Fun fact, that recipe for lemon curd came from a different olden tymee sandwich recipe! No plus up here but if you wanted to add some fresh blueberries that would very tasty as well.

Egg and Chutney Sandwich (1905)
Salads, Sandwiches, and Savouries.

Rating: 5 1/2

Ah yes, the great taste of hard boiled egg meets the tangy sweet flavor of chutney. Turns out, it wasn’t that bad. Wasn’t mind-blowing either. For this one I ask y’all to weigh in on what I should plus it up with and boy howdy, did you respond. So much so that when I revisit it I am going to do eight plus ups instead of the four I had originally planned on doing. So many great ideas! Thank you!

Emergency Sandwich (1920)
The Calendar of Beverages and Sandwiches

Rating: 4 1/2
Plus up: Capers
Plussed up rating: 4

Just so you know, I used regular table salt for the old sandwich recipes (as opposed to kosher salt which I use for everyday cooking). So when a recipe is too salty, it’s entirely down to how much salt they say to put in. Such was the case here. Not bad but too salty. Then your truly decided that capers would be a good idea for the plus up. They were not. While they do provide a pickley pop, they also bring more salt via the brine they are stored in. Oops. Pobody’s nerfect!

Ramly Burger (Malaysia
International Sandwich Sunday

Rating: 10

Apparently, Ramly is a chain over in Malaysia. So the recipe I followed was clearly an interpretation of that. And man, was it tasty. Between the season chicken patty, black pepper sauce, and fresh vegetables, this was an explosion of flavor. The egg is a fun novelty but didn’t really add much. Still, no need for a plus up here. Despite me forgetting to rate in the video, it was a ten all the way.

In The Chips withBarry!

Cornitos Tikk Masala tortilla chips

This was a match made in heaven. Warm spices with a kick on corn tortilla chips. Absolutely a five.

Doritos Canada Zesty Cheese

While not terribly zesty, these were decidedly cheesy. Which was not a bad consolation prize tbh.

Taco flavored Doritos

Nostalgia play all the way. Definitely tasted of the hard shell tacos with the seasoning blend packet flavor that my parents would by in the 1970s. By no means “authentic” to Mexican cuisine but still tasty.

Can It Sandwich?

You can watch the idiotic dancing in the opening and nothing else because all three were five star sandwiches including the all in one. T’was a good week.

Enough looking back, let us be the ones who look forward! Thanks again for watching, reading, and subscribing to Sandwiches of History! See you next week!

Cheers,
Barry 🥪
