đŸ„Ș sandwiches đŸ„Ș

First off, apologies for sending that ill-fated one question survey that didn’t work. I hadn’t set one up before and once you send the email ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So, yeah, sorry about that. But, I still want to know if you like to see something different in a weekly recap than what I am doing now. So if you have a sec, leave a comment on this post. I’d appreciate it.

And of course a reminder that Summer of Sandwiches kicks off this week in Detroit whree my special will none other that Jake from Roll For Sandwich! Then on to Buffalo, Toronto, Dublin, and London. Get your tickets here.

Ok, on to the sandwiches!

Martha Stewart’s Favorite Onion Sandwich
Our History

Rating: 7
Plus up: Frying up the onions in a pan
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

I think the term “epically straightforward” applies to this sandwich. Bread, butter, white onion, salt, and pepper. The butter lessened the bite of the onion so it was actually kind of tasty. I opted to plus it up by putting some color on the onions in a pan which I definitely recommend.

Borden Cottage Cheese and Jam Sandwich (1960s)
TV Commercial

Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Chili powder
Plussed up rating: 7

When I first saw the commercial for Borden’s cottage cheese, I could just picture the pitch meeting. “Then the kid snaps his fingers and says, “Hey yeah, Borden’s cottage cheese!” That make it stick in people’s minds!” Alas, not wrong as it’s stuck in mind lol. Cottage cheese paired with strawberry jam is not a bad combo. I chose to plus it up with a chili powder spice blend as it goes well with fruit.

Sardine Raisin Bread Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches

Rating: 3
Plus up: Sumac
Plussed up rating: 3 1/2

Unlike the Tuna and Raisin Bread Sandwich from the week prior, this one did not surprise and delight, if you know what I mean. I don’t have an aversion to sardines in the least. But the combo with the raisins just wasn’t working for me. Plussing it up with the lemony tartness of sumac helped as that flavor profile worked with both the fish and the raisins. But yeah, it wasn’t enough to make me want to eat it again.

Brick Cheese & Honey Sandwich
Our History

Rating: 5
Plus up: Chili flakes
Plussed up rating: 5 1/2

This was fun because I got to try a cheese I’ve never had before - brick cheese. Apparently, it is used on Detroit style pizzas which makes a ton of sense give that it stands next to brick mozzarella. This sandwich was odd in that on of the slices of bread was microwaved with the cheese on it, then topped with honey and a top slice of bread. Not a fan of nuking bread in the first place. But the cheese/honey combo as tasty. I wished it had called for hot honey so I kinda made it happen by plussing it up with red chili flakes.

Mustarded Meat Sandwich (1927)
Salads and Sandwiches

Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Dill pickles
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

Gotta love a recipe that just calls for “meat.” What kind? Eh, whatever ya got will work I guess. Given the opportunity to choose, I opted for roast beef. Tasty combo with the onions and Dijon mustard. Just needed a little pickley pop to send it over the top.

Kippered Herring Sandwich III (1930)
Edgewater Sandwich and Hors d'oeuvres Book

Rating: 7
Plus up: Old Bay Hot Sauce | Dijon mustard
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2 | 8

I hadn’t had kippered herring before starting Sandwiches of History. Now I can’t get enough. And adding them to scrambled eggs? Yes, please, and thank you. Given the seafood orientation I was originally just going to plus it up with Old Bay Hot Sauce. But something about Dijon was tugging on mind so opted for two plus ups. Have to give the edge to Dijon mustard. The harpness contrasted the rich eggs and smoky fish perfectly. Don’t get wrong, the Old Bay Hot Sauce was no slouch but yea.

Potato Salad Sandwich (Korea)
International Sandwich Sunday

Rating: 7
Plus up: Gochugaru
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

I’ve had this sandwich saved on Instagram ever since I saw Maanghi make it. It’s a pretty straight forward mashup of egg salad and potato salad with ham added. It was tasty but I wanted a little bit more depth so I plussed it up with gochugaru (Korean red chili flakes). As many pointed out, kimchi would’ve also been a good move.

In The Chips with Barry

đŸ‡ș🇾 Kettle Brand Chamoy potato chips

Kettle Brand has a fantastic track record of nailing complex flavors and these were no exception. Sweet, tangy, salty with just a little kick of heat. Soooo good.

đŸ‡ș🇾 Flammin’ Hot Dill Cheetos

I have to admit, I am stunned by the number of folks who thought the way I pronounced “flammin’” was serious. I am goofball, my friends. Anyway, these actually did a good job of balancing the flamin’ hot flavor with dill.

🇹🇳 Lay’s China Bacon potato chips

These were interesting. Even though they didn’t pay off the bacon flavor, they did have a nice smoky, savory flavor to them. I wouldn’t seek them out but might be worth checking out if you seem them in the wild.

Well, can it?

And that’s a wrap on last week! As always, thanks for watching and reading! See you next week.

Cheers,
Barry
