Sandwiches n' Snacks
Time for a recap!
I think “all over the map” is an apt metaphor for last week’s sandwiches. From a stoner ice cream sandwich to and oddball egg salad sandwich to me trying liverwurst for the first time which surprised a lot of folks. We just didn’t have it in the house growing up and it has liver in the name so yeah, I have avoided it (wasn’t bad though!) Also this week, In The Chips with Barry switched to In The Snacks with Barry (although the name didn’t change). Yes, I have a small backlog of non-potato chips to get through as well).
Paid subs got a real “treat”(?) with member-exclusive video of me making and tasting Toast Water from 1915. Yep, Toast water. I want emphasize once again though, if you are paid subscriber here on Substack, you can save a few bucks ($2.99/mo vs. here which is $5/mo) by subscribing on YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok. Substack will not let me lower the price here. That said, as long as there are paying subscribers here I will continue to post the exclusive content here as well.

Grandma’s Boy Ice Cream Sandwich (Grandma’s Boy movie)
a sandwich of entertainment history
Rating: 4
Plus ups: Chocolate sauce
Plussed up rating: 6
I kicked things off last week with and oddball sandwich from entertainment history. Unlike the typical Ice Cream Sandwich, this one featured whole wheat bread and lettuce. Which is what happened when, in the film, when grandma got accidentally stoned. The nuttiness of the bread was ok but the iceberg lettuce (which what I am pretty sure the grandma character would’ve had on hand) was a tad bitter. Not a problem for the chocolate sauce plus up to bulldoze right over lol

Egg Salad Sandwich (1911)
The Arizona Cook Book
Sandwich rating: 4.5
Plus up: A “smidge” of black pepper lol
Plussed up rating: 6
How do you follow a stoned grandma’s oddball Ice Cream Sandwich? Why, with an oddball Egg Salad Sandwich from 1911, of course. Pretty straight forward (aside from having to make “salad dressing”). Plussed it up with

Sandwich (Cheese and Honey) (1931)
The White Lily Flour Cook Book
Snack Sandwich Rating: 6
Plus up: Hatch green chili powder
Plussed up rating: 7.5
By Wednesday, I hit paydirt with this sandwich. Cheese and honey go nicely together already. The obvious choice was jalapeño however I did not have any on hand. Hatch chili powder to the rescue (along with melting under the broiler which got all the flavors mingling nice-nice).

Liverwurst Sandwich (1957)
Leave It To Beaver TV Show
Rating: 5.5
Plus up: Horseradish aioli
Plussed up rating: 6.5
Ah yes, the sandwich that seemed to shock a lot of y’all. As I mentioned up top, we just didn’t have it in the house growing up. And nothing about the name liverwurst made me want to try it as an adult. Turns out, it was pretty good. Of course, it had a thick slice tomato, some cheese, and mustard to help out so there was that. Plussed it up with

Jellygrill Sandwich (1970s/80)
Kraft advertisement
Rating: 5
Plus up: Chili powder
Plussed up rating: 6
Wrapping up the work week with a little advertising-based sandwiching from Kraft. As I mentioned previously, sweet and cheese can go together nicely. This, though, was a bit of a stretch. After all, grape jelly is really sweet and Velveeta cheese product (while a great melter for many recipes) ain’t exactly cheese. Plussed it up with

Grandma’s Hot Dogs In Gravy Chicken
Our History
Rating: 8.5
Plus up: Pinch of garlic powder and melted mozzarella cheese
Plussed up rating: 9
I think had this recipe used hot Italian sausages it would’ve rated even higher. Still, the old school building of flavors made what was an Italian-esue hot dog Sloppy Joe into something quite a bit better.

Northern Garlic Sandwich (China)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 9
Plus up: Green onions and Lao Gon Ma Fried Chilis in Oil
Plussed up rating: 10
When Redditor Molliphi shared the link to ’s Garlic Egg recipe, I was stoked to see it is served in a bun. And I have to say, having never made bao or any other steamed bread like it before (I have made Boston Brown Bread from scratch but that’s a totally different animal), I was pleasantly surprised how easy the recipe from Woon Heng was. Together with the garlic egg mixture, it made for fluffy deliciousness. I must admit, the moment I saw the recipe for the filling I knew I’d be plussing it up with green onions (or chives) and Lao Gan Ma fried chiles (and garlic and peanuts) in oil. Sooooo good.

In The Chips…err, Snacks with Barry 🥔
Flint Red Caviar Rye Wheat Crisps
Yep, from Ukraine, Red Caviar rye wheat crisps…that really did taste of red caviar. But it was like eating croutons as a snack…which I don’t hate.
Picard’s Dill Pickel Chip Nuts
This whole concept was new to me. Potato starch covered peanuts? And dill pickled flavored at that? Alrighty then.
Evil Snacks Sour Cream Crunchy Mushrooms
I love me some mushroom so when Ashley sent these in I was a bit excited. Oddly the mushroom and the sour cream flavor was muted a bit. But it was still tasty.
Can It Sandwich?
Snack attack edition!
Hard to believe it but just 12 more sandwiches left in 2025 before the review vids kick in. See you next week with a recap of 7 of ‘em!
Cheers,
Barry
