Sandwiches of History from the road

Writing this from the Austin airport after doing a fun sold out show last night here. Now I’m off to Las Vegas, Denver, Minneapolis, and Tempe for the final four Sandwiches of History: LIVE! shows. If you’re in the area, come on out!

But, being on the road doesn’t stop the sandwich postin’ (though it does seriously crimp In The Chips with Barry for a couple weeks). So, without further ado…

Tomato Sandwich (1915)
Recipes For Salads Dressing Sauces and Sandwiches

Rating: 6
Plus ups: “Smidge” of black pepper lol and salt
Plussed up rating: 7

You know, when I read tomato sandwich what I don’t think is chopped tomatoes and walnuts mixed with mayonnaise. And yet here we are. It wasn’t too bad though, just need a slight dusting (see also sarcasm) of black pepper and salt.

Should you make this? You could try adding walnuts to your regular tomato sandwich but honestly, it won’t make it better, really. So, no.

Smoked Salmon Sandwich (1951)
Just for Two Cookbooks

Rating: cold smoked 7 | hot smoked 7
Plus up: Fresh chives and black pepper
Plussed up rating: cold smoked 8 | hot smoked 7 /12

Not gonna lie, soaking the shrettuce and tomato in the “French dressing” was nice. While the chives and black pepper were definitely plus ups, the base sandwich was pretty dang good. Especially the one that used cold smoked salmon.

Should you make this? Yeah, but the cold smoked one. Oh, and drain the veggies better than I did.

Peanut Butter Sandwich (1915)
100 Picnic Suggestions

Rating: with olives 4 1/2 | with mashed sardines 3 1/2
Plus up: sliced white onion | sriracha and basil
Plussed up rating: with olives 5 1/2 | with mashed sardines 6 1/2

This was quite the flavor adventure. Surprisingly, while the neither the olives or mashed sardines were great with the peanut butter, they weren’t horrific either. Adding a little white onion to the olive version did help but not as drastically as the addition of sriracha and basil to the mashed sardine version.

Should you make this? I’n gonna say nope

Recipe Remix: Bologna and Egg Sandwich (1924)
Cooking Menus Service

Rating: On a scale of 1 to 10, fantastic.

So, the original version of this sandwich had us add chopped up bologna and sweet pickles to a scrambled egg then cook it. For the Recipe Remix, I kept the bologna, pickle, and egg but mades some serious adjustments. The result was a tasty bologna breakfast sandwich of sorts. With will pickles, thank you very much.

Should you make this? Yes

Peanut Butter and Cabbage Sandwich (1936) w/Guest Host Gaby Brillante
1,001 Sandwiches

Rating: 3
Plus up: Soy sauce and lettuce
Plussed up rating: 5 1/2

When I offered up the Peanut Butter and Cabbage Sandwich for Gaby’s guest host, she did not even blink. I mean, while it isn’t anything I’d crave it also didn’t sound awful. Gaby definitely found it lacking but was able to rescue it by plussing it up with soy sauce and lettuce. Gabby did a great job and even kept it true Sandwiches of History style by forgetting to hit record at one point. Yeah, it’s me. I’m the problem it’s me. Lol

Should you make it? Nah

Bologna, Green Bell Pepper, and Ketchup Sandwich
Our History

Rating: 5
Plus up: Sliced black olives, oregano, and chili flakes
Plussed up rating: 6

This was one of two sandwiches submitted by John. This one, from his dad who apparently ate this as kid. Which kind of explains the ketchup. The base sandwich wasn’t bad but adding a little black olives, oregano, and chili flakes made it just shy of a pizza-esque kind of thing. Which was pretty ok.

Should you make this? Um…probably not

Double Cut Roll (Australia)
International Sandwich Sunday

Rating: 7 1/2
Minus down: Pickled pepperoncini
Minus down rating: 8

This massive double decker sandwich was tasty despite the presence of pickled beets. I saw someone comment online that it was the same on top and bottom because it was intended for two people. Not sure I buy that given that splitting the top and bottom would result in a mess. That said, the version I made was pretty big so sharing ain’t a bad idea. It was a ham and cheese sandwich x2 with a lot of fresh elements that were kind of nice tbh. I plussed up with the pickley pop of pepperoncini which add a nice zest to it.

Should you make it? Yeah, why not (but would be better if you could share it with someone)
