Sandwiches, so many sandwiches

Ok, only seven, but still

Sandwiches, so many sandwiches

I am trying my best to keep Sandwiches of History an oasis amid everything going on right now. A respite, if you will, from the non-stop onslaught of horrible news. I have to admit, though, it is extremely difficult. So, without further ado…

Tony Danza’s Favorite Tomato Sandwich (2004)
Star Palate

Rating: 8
Plus up: Calabrian chili paste
Plussed up rating: 9

Every once in a while, I need a layup. A sandwich that’s easy to make and tasty. This was one of those sandwiches. Focaccia, gorgonzola, tomato, arugula…I mean, there’s no way this was going to suck. As you might suspect, I did want a little kick of heat. Enter Calabrian chili paste. Sooooo good.

Ham Sandwich (1901)
Cabinet Cook Book

Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Arugula
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2

Hard to go wrong with ham and a mustard butter. That said, it was pretty rich what with the egg yolk and everything. Plussed it up with the peppery bite of arugula which added some much needed freshness too.

Salmon Layer Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwich

Rating: 4
Plus up: Old Bay seasoning
Plussed up rating: 3

I may have started the week on a layup but with sandwich I got dunked on. Setting aside the odd choice to have salmon on the outside of the sandwich, the real kicker here was the bread. Raisin bread. I mean…no. Then I managed to make it worse by adding Old Bay seasoning. A minus down as opposed to a plus up. That said, I’ve got a video coming this week that combines tuna and raisin bread and it is a success. The difference? The type of raisin bread called for.

Beef Sandwich (1943)
The Victory Binding of American Woman’s Cook Book

Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Suya spice blend
Plussed up rating: 7

The original sandwich was ok. Kind of just shy of a kind of BBQ beef sandwich. I opted to plus it up with some Suya spice blend I had leftover from an International Sandwich Sunday a few weeks ago. It’s got ground peanut, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder…actually, click the link above and you can see the whole list. It is tasty, tasty stuff that not only goes well with beef but also worked with the ketchup an Worcestershire sauce.

The Manwich
Our History

Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Fresh dill
Plussed up rating: 6

This sandwich very much sounded like it was invented by high schoolers in the late 70s. Summer sausage, cheese, and mayonnaise “warmed” in the microwave (though back in 1978 it probably was an Amana Radarrange). Tasty enough but there was to much summer sausage and the microwave ain’t exactly the best thing for a sandwich imho. Plussed it up with a little fresh dill that did brighten things a bit. Kind of feeling like doing a Recipe Remix on this one.

Prosperity Sandwich (1925?)
Mayfair Hotel in St. Louis

Rating: 7
Plus up: Pepperoncini
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

This Hot Brown-esque sandwich was pretty ok. Not mindblowing but solid. I was suprised that despite having two cheeses in there that the sauce was a bit bland. Perked things up with a pickely pepperoncini plus up which helped cut the richness a bit.

Broken Hill Cheese Slaw Sandwich (Australia)
International Sandwich Sunday

Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Grilled Cheese Treatment using sesame chili oil
Plussed up rating: 8

Easily one of the least complicated international sandwiches I’ve done. The sandiwch essentially replaces the cabbage in cole slaw with shredded cheese. It was tasty but begged for the Grilled Cheese Treatment. But rather than using butter or mayonnaise, I opted for the rich yet spicy sesame chili oil which added so much the sandwich. Highly recommend picking some up to have on hand.
