Sandwiches with a side o' potato chips.
That's right, time for the weekly recap
And we’re back at it with the weekly recap for Sandwiches of History and In The Chips with Barry. I eased up a bit on this week’s potato chip reviews only doing two flavors in each video as opposed to three like last week. Still, it was a lot!
By the way, if you watch on Facebook, you might have noticed that my videos are being posted three and four times. Rest assured that is not intentional and I am trying track down how it’s happening so I can stop it.
Ok, on to sandwiches and chips!

Savoury Butter Sandwich (1927)
Good Food From America
Tea Sandwich Rating: 7
Plus ups: Toasting in the oven
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
The filling of the sandwich was essentially a compound butter. Just add minced garlic and it would be great on steak. A bit parsley forward but one everything came together it was pretty ok for a tea sandwich. Plussed it up by toasting which not only allowed the butter to melt into the bread but also added some nice texture.
Should you make it? Yes, with tea, please.

Near Chicken Sandwich (1920)
The Calendar of Sandwiches and Beverages
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Dill seasoning
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
For once the name of a sandwich lead to me learning something. I had no idea why one might want to emulate chicken given how easy it is to get. Well, that’s today. Back in the early 1900s industrial chicken farming didn’t exist but hog farming did. Thus the use of pork here instead. It was tasty “salad” style sandwich that I plussed up with a little dill seasoning (could’ve added capers or even pickles themselves, really)
By the way that dill seasoning was one I threw together for an ice cream flavor I was doing over on Barry’s Ice Cream O’Clock. It’s comprised of dried dill, citric acid, and salt.
Should you make it? Sure, why not?

Breakfast in a Bun (1965) with Black Dane Coffee
The 1,000 Fabulous Sandwich
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Black pepper & Horseradish mayonnaise | Zoe roast coffee from Black Dane
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2 | 8
Man, this breakfast sandwich was thiiiiis close to being spot on. But just needed a little something something so I plussed it up with some black pepper and horseradish mayo. Cheese would’ve been nice too. Of course, there was the extra plus up of the Zoe medium roast from Black Dane coffee. Normally, I am a dark roast guy but this tasty coffee went really well with the breakfast sandwich.
Should you make this? Yeah, the plussed up version

The Smokey Mountain (1976)
Winning Sandwiches for Menu Makers
Rating: 7
Plus up: Removing some pickle
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
This sandwich had all the lively meats…and a lot of dill action. Putting the pickles sprinkled with dill over the cheese and then putting it in the oven was just odd. The sandwich itself tasted good but the pickles too many and warm. So the plus up du jour was to remove the pickles, then add some back in bite size pieces.
Should you make this? Yes but add the pickles after melting and close it up

Salami Sausage Sandwich (1920)
The Calendar of Sandwiches and Beverages
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Swiss cheese and shrettuce
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Ok, before we get into, yes the misalignment of bread drove me nuts too. I didn’t notice it until after I had spread the bread with tartare sauce . But I soldiered on nonetheless. A fair amount of tanginess with this one so I plussed it up with ingredients that would absorb some of that - Swiss cheese and shrettuce.
Should you make it? Yes but the plussed up one and fry up the summer sausage in a pan before making.

Grandpa’s Cheesy Sandwich
Our History
Rating: 4 1/2
Plus up: The pickley pop of capers!
Plussed up rating: 5
This was another sandwich where I learned something. Miracle Whip was brought to market in 1931 as an alternative to mayonnaise which I guess was relatively expensive (it was during The Great Depression, after all). Miracle Whip is not my bag, baby but with the cheese and onions it wasn’t horrible. The pickley pop of capers helped as would’ve a hot sauce like Crystal.
Should you make it? Unless you love Miracle Whip, no (or if you sub in mayo, yes?)

Coronation Chicken Sandwich (UK)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 9
Plus up: None
I first made the Coronation Chicken Sandwich back in February, 2022. For some reason, I made the original 1950s dish, Coronation Chicken, then put into a sandwich. The sandwich as it is sold today is nothing like that really. So, I decided to make things right and did the modern version. Between the curry powder, mango chutney, and almonds this was a chicken salad sandwich like no other. Didn’t feel compelled to plus it up in any as it was so nicely balanced. I followed this recipe if you want to give it a go.
Should you make it? Absolutely

In The Chips with Barry 🥔
Still have a backlog of chips but toned it down this week by only doing two flavors in each review.
Sprouts
- Herb Stuffing potato chips
- Maple potato chips
Ah, Sprouts. They do try but they don’t often succeed. Today was a good day for them. I can’t say as though I’d crave maple flavored potato chips but they were well done. As were the stuffing ones (though I think Trader Joe’s does a better version).
Marks & Spencer
- Lamb Kofta potato chips
- Sticky Glazed Pork Ribs potato chips
The lamb kofta chips (with zero lamb in them) were quite tasty. The pork rib chips (which did have dried pork as an ingredient) did tastes of BBQ sauce but not really of pork. Go figure.
Zapps’s
- Salt & Vinegar potato chips
- Hotter ‘N Hot Jalapeño potato chips
These were both ok. The jalapeño one were not, in fact, hotter ‘n hot but they did have a little heat some good jalapeño flavor. The salt and vinegar ones were fine but didn’t really have the punch I want from and S & V chip.
Can It Sandwich?
Not gonna lie, I had a lot of fun with this week’s Can It Sandwich? intro.
Well, that’s a sandwich on last week. See you next week!
Cheers,
Barry
