Sándwich de Miga (Argentina)
International Sandwich Sunday

Original rating: 7.5
Plus up: Chimichurri
Plussed up rating: 8.5

This sandwich was quite the adventure. First procuring the pan de miga (miga meaning crumb in Spanish), the special bread used for these sandwiches was a bit difficult. While the San Francisco Bay Area has a ton of Asian and Indian grocery stores, Argentinean ones, not so much. So I trekked up to Redwood City and visited The Empanadas King. He makes and sells it but wasn’t satisfied with the results that day and asked me to come back tomorrow. Then, a few minutes later he asked how many I needed and then emerged from the back with 5 sheets wrapped in plastic for me. He salvaged them from the giant block of bread that he wasn’t happy with and refused to let me pay him for it. So nice. Of course, I found out after the fact that folks who make these at home just use white bread. Lol. Still, it was fun to make and eat as it had avocado mayo, ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and egg salad. Most of the time these are simpler sandwiches with just, say, ham and cheese. But I wanted to go all in. So I did it this way.

Russian Egg Sandwich (1926)
The Art of Sandwich Making

Original rating: 4.5
Plus up: Capers and red onion
Plussed up rating: 8

This sandwich was clearly named for the Russian-esque dressing rather than it being part of Russian cuisine. Fun fact, the reason Russian dressing was called Russian dressing is because the earliest mayonnaise based versions actually had Russian caviar in them. I, for one, am grateful that fell by the wayside from a budgetary perspective. This wasn’t bad but the sauce was rather bare bones. The punch of red onion and pop of capers absolutely livened things up.

Kimbo’s Delight (1973)
William’s Sandwich Recipes

Original rating: 7.5
Plus up: Avocado
Plussed up rating: 8.5

This was a tasty mess of a sandwich. But the combo of salami, turkey, Swiss cheese, tomato, sprouts, cucumber, and mayonnaise was solid. And, since this felt like a very 70s sandwich, I thought, “why not plus it up with a very 70s ingredient - avocado?” And it fit right in.

Peanut Butter Sandwich (1918)
Conservation Recipes

Original rating: 4.5
Plus up: Sichuan salt and dill pickles
Plussed up rating: 6

I learned a lot with this video. Like how I should have been explicit that the peanut butter I used was ground at the store making it probably identical to the kind used in 1918. Also, that the addition of hot milk was likely spurred on by a campaign by the U.S. government to get adults to “eat more milk.” I have to say though, the diluting of peanut butter wasn’t really my cup of tea. Which is why my plus ups were so flavorful. I do want to recommend two things for you to try. First, if you haven’t, a peanut butter/dill pickle sandwich. It is tasty all on it’s own. The second, is make the Sichuan salt (recipe linked above). It is fantastic on a variety of food, especially roasted chicken.

Dutch Sandwich (1918)
Salads and Sandwiches

Original rating: 5.5
Plus up: Hen of the Woods BBQ Meat Rub
Plussed up rating: 6.5

Having not grown up eating beans on toast, the idea of having beans as a sandwich filling still sounds odd to me. Yet, the combo of baked beans combined with parsley, celery, onion juice, and mayonnaise was pretty tasty. I get a lot of folks commenting/asking about onion juice. I had never heard of either until starting Sandwiches of History. You can buy it in a bottle (affiliate link) or simply make it by grating some onion and squeezing. Adding that Hen of the Woods BBQ rub made it even better (btw, Hen of the Woods also makes some pretty tasty potato chips too. I reviewed ‘em over on In The Chips with Barry). One other interesting thing was the number of folks who thought the use of Dutch in the name might have been meant in a derogatory manner. I don’t think that was the case here but then you never know. Others opined that it was a reference to the Pennsylvania Dutch which actually makes more sense to me.

Lemon and Nut Sandwich (1941)
500 Tasty Sandwiches

Original rating: 8.5
Plus up: Saskatoon Berry Jam
Plussed up rating: 9

A lot of folks think that when I bust out the butts of the loaf it is because I know the sandwich is going to suck. That is true to some extent but I also tend to use them when the flavor of the sandwich is going to be assertive. Such is the case with the Lemon and Nut Sandwich. Essentially it’s lemon curd and almonds and it was tasty. I was going to plus it up with fresh blueberries but it is winter and the ones at the store looked sad. So I decided it was time to bust out the Saskatoon Berry Jam sent to me by my friend Jon aka Sandwich Dad. Less sweet and more floral than, say, a blueberry jam, it worked brilliantly with the tangy sweet lemon curd.

Greatest Man Sandwich in the World (1950s?)
Gene Kelly

Original rating: 8
Plus up: Mug of pilsner
Plussed up rating: 9

This was way more delicious than I though it would be. When I read the recipe all I could think was that it was going to be heavy and gloppy. While it wasn’t light, it was fantastic. Yes, you could add chives and/or even crumbled bacon as plus ups and both would be fantastic. I decided to keep it simple and follow Gene Kelly’s recommendation by grabbing the “nearest mug of beer.” As if I just keep mugs of beer laying around. Lol
