Ohio Shredded Chicken Sandwich
regional history
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus ups: Sliced fresh jalapeños
Plussed up rating: 8
What’s funny about both regional and some international sandwiches is that for every comment from someone who has lived somewhere their who lives and has never heard of it, there an equal amount of commenters that recognize it immediately. Either way, this was totally comfort food. Rich, chickeny goodness on a bun. I mean, I wouldn’t advise eating it every day but it is still worth trying. I opted for fresh jalapeños over pickled as I wanted more heat and crunch. I think I made the right call.
Should you make it? I say yes

Onion and Mayonnaise Sandwich (1927)
The Motorist’s Luncheon Book
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Arugula
Plussed up rating: 7
Boy howdy, was this a controversial sandwich. First, the lack of mayonnaise in the recipe. My friend Adam did a little digging and suggest that mayonnaise was being used as a general term for sauce. That did happen a bit but wasn’t common. So it may have been the writers and editors were doing something a little old fashioned or it could’ve been an error. Second, it called for corned beef which I would think you’d want to put in the name of the sandwich. But both of those mysteries were overshadowed by the sheer number of folks who were upset that I didn’t plus it up with mayonnaise. It was intentional on my part not to do that but I didn’t figure so many folks would get so seemingly upset about it. Kept it fresh with the peppery bite of arugula. No regerts.
Should you make it? Nope

Egg and Shrimp Paste Sandwich (1910)
Every Woman’s Encyclopedia (London)
Rating: 6
Plus up: capers
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Two controversial sandwiches back-to-back? Yep, but this one was on me. I (incorrectly) assumed shrimp paste used in London in 1910 would just be mashed up shrimp. It is but the shrimp should’ve been mashed up with butter, cayenne pepper, salt, and mace or nutmeg. Which would make a difference, especially for the plus up. So, I will be revisiting the sandwich this week (so much for “never making this again” lol). This version was a nice little tea sandwich though and it did benefit from the pickley pop of capers. So, there’s that?
Should you make this? No! Too much work.

Sopress So Clean (recent/random history)
Adventures In Aardia: Roll For Sandwich Series
Rating: 10
Plus up: None
Every once in a while my friend Jake over on his series Roll For Sandwich (wherein he rolls D&D die to determine the different ingredients for a sandwich) rolls a 10. This one was so far fetched I had to try it. Soppressata, cranberry goat cheese, guava paste, pickled green tomatoes, and pizza hot sauce on toasted rye bread?! I thought for minute he’d lost it. Turns out, nope. It was a cacophony of flavors that worked great together. Go figure.
Should you make this? Yes, though it requires a lot of different ingredients

Ding Dong School Sandwich (1950s)
Ding Dong School (television show)
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Thai sweet chili sauce
Plussed up rating: 7
Ding Dong School, which ran from 1952 - 1956, was a pre-cursor to Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, Sesame Street, and the like. Way before my TV watching youth. What struck me about this was the addition of lettuce to a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Maybe tastes changed by the time I was a kid but I know I would not have been into it. Well, I’m an adult now (or so I’d like to think) and that combo did not offend. But I did want the plus up to bridge the sweetness of the banana, nuttiness of the peanut butter, and the slightly bitter lettuce. Enter Thai sweet chili sauce which, as it turned out, worked great!
Should you make it? Yes but the plussed up verion

Lacy Sandwich
Our History
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Pico Pica Mexican Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
I’ve been doing Sandwiches of History for years now and while I’ve seen a number of sandwiches of “our history” recipes that combine peanut butter with other ingredients, avocado was never one of them. Well, Texas entered the chat and with it came avocado and onion. Sure enough, peanut butter proved again just how versatile it can be. Plussed it up with Pico Pica Mexican Hot Sauce which pretty much tastes like if you made chili powder seasoning blend spicy. Yum!
Should you make it? Yeah, it was pretty good, especially with the hot sauce.

Churrasco Marino (Chile)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 9
Plus up: Kewpie mayonnaise
Plus up rating: 9 1/2
This was a tasty sandwich. I was really surprised by how the seasoning on the fish actually came through. And love how well it worked with the flavors of the onion salad. The one thing I felt it needed was a little richness. So I tapped Kewpie mayonnaise, with it’s rich, umami flavor for the job and it worked well.
Should you make it? Yep!

In The Chips with Barry 🥔
Aaaand we’re back to a normal amount of potato chips per review. Although given how many chips keep showing up in my P.O. Box, probably gonna have to fire up the multi-review videos again.
Lucien Piccalilli potato chips
Well, this was a first. I’ve never seen piccalili flavored potato chips before but here was Belgium showing up. And they were good to boot!
Dunnes Stores Whiskey Smoked Bacon potato chips
I picked these up over in Dublin when I did a Sandwiches of History: LIVE! show there this past July. Not worth the luggage space as these were a bit nasty.
Hardbite Turkey Stuffing potato chips
Despite the name, there were no turkey squeezin’s in these. Still, they were definitely tasty stuffing potato chips.
Can It Sandwich?
Only two chips made it to Can It Sandwich? this week. But did they sandwich? Find out!
That’s all the sandwiches and chips fit to print this week. See you next Monday!
Cheers,
Barry
