Salmon and Ham Sandwich (1966)
Cooking for American Homemakers
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Old Bay, Tomato, and Lettuce
Plussed up rating: 7
Not gonna lie, I have never thought to mix ham and salmon for any dish let alone a sandwich. Yet, the combo worked pretty well. That said, it wasn’t quite there so as is the case with sandwiches like that, I opted to plus it up. The Old Bay seasoning went well with both the ham and the salmon and also served to season the tomato nicely.

Broiler Sandwich (1927)
Watkins Cook Book
Rating: 7
Plus up: Bacon, Melted Cheddar Cheese, and top piece of meated bread
Plussed up rating: 9
This isn’t the first sandwich that called for raw beef to be placed on bread then broiled but it’s probably the earliest recipe for it that I’ve come across. It’s interesting to me that they all want you to broil the sandwich. Clearly cooking it upside down int he pan would get more flavor on via the Maillard reaction. Anywho, the original was find but I sort of indulged myself by plussing it up with bacon, cheese, and another slice of bread with meat on it.

Scotch Woodcock (1884)
Breakfast Dishes
Rating: 4 1/2
Plus up: Salt-free Cajun Seasoning Blend
Plussed up rating: 5 1/2
This certainly was not like any Scotch Woodcock recipe I’d seen. But we make the recipes as written here at Sandwiches of History and Light Manufacturing Concern LTD. The amount of bread and sauce was almost able to stave of the saltiness of the anchovy paste. Almost. But it was just kinda bland. So, I called in the salt-free Cajun seasoning blend and it did the trick. I mean, it didn’t make it something I’d want to eat again but it did make me want to finish it as opposed to tossing in the bin.

Sandwich Supreme (1925)
The Richmond Item (newspaper)
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Sichuan Rub
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
With the green bell peppers, ham, and hardboiled egg, this really did taste kinda like a Denver omelet (which I love). Plussed it up with a Sichuan peppercorn rub that has salt and sugar in it and man, did that send it.

Valentine Layer Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Rating: 1
Plus up: Nope
While this was disappointing, it was not surprising. Not sure why anyone would think to pair the brininess of green olives with raspberry jam but they did. And it did. not. work. At all. Never making this again, that’s for sure. Oh well, at least it was a lot of work 🤦♂️

Meatloaf Sandwich (recent history)
Turkey and The Wolf: Flavor Trippin’ in New Orleans
Rating: 10
Plus up: None
This is now the fourth sandwich I’ve made from this cookbook and it, like the others, did not disappoint. The thing I really dig about Chef Mason Hereford’s recipes is that as you’re eating you get different flavors revealed to you. From the spiced meatloaf, to the pepper jam, to the sesame seeds, this was just an explosion of flavor. Highly recommend you pick up that cookbook.

Uitsmijter (Netherlands)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 7
Plus up: The Pepper Plant Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
Hard to go wrong with ham, cheese, and eggs, right? Still, I think it would’ve been better to toast the bread, cook the ham a little bit, and melt the cheese a little bit. Plussed it up with the garlicky, flavorful, and mildly spicy The Pepper Plant Hot Sauce. It’s so good with eggs of any kind.

In The Chips with Barry 🥔
President’s Choice Buffalo Wings and Blue Cheese Potato Chips
Canada
These were tasty. They really did deliver on the buttery Frank’s RedHot sauce of Buffalo wings and the tang of blue cheese.
Cold Snap Chippery Salt and Zing Potato Chips
Canada
Some salt and vinegar potato chips (which is what this flavor really is) overpower the potato flavor. Thankfully that didn’t happen here since Cold Snap Chippery uses some tasty potatoes.
Proper Crisps Dill Pickle and Apple Cider Vinegar Potato Chips
New Zealand
I’ve not ever seen the combo of dill pickle and apple cider vinegar. But after trying these chips, I have wonder why. Those flavors go really nicely together!
Alas, no Can It Sandwich? last week as I somehow deleted the source footage before I had a chance to edit together. Classic me. Oh well, I’m back at this week and promise to try and do better. Thanks for watching and reading!
Cheers,
Barry 🥪
