Sandos galore!

The week that were

Another absolutely crazy week both from a work and Sandwiches of History perspective. In addition to sourcing the recipes, shopping, editing/thumbnailing/writing and staging the daily posts, there’s this newsletter to write and the Sandwiches of History: LIVE! to plan. And while I am going on vacation in a couple weeks, you won’t be without your daily fix as I’ve lined up guest hosts! Some will look familiar, some will be all new face. But should be a lot of fun and allow me some much needed rest and relaxation.

The book is real-ish! What I hold in hot little hands there is a dummy book. Looks like the book, is put together like the book but contains nothing but blank pages. And yes, I plan on having some fun with that fact. At any rate, you can pre-order now the book now. And I am working on pre-order thank you gift (yes, if you’ve already pre-ordered you will get the thank you gift).

Just a heads up, there are affiliate links in here (if it goes to Amazon, it’s an affiliate link). If you buys something via that links I get a very small amount of money (think cents) to help offset ingredient costs.

As always, please hit ❤️ and share if you enjoy this little re-cap action. Thanks!

Doubles (Trinidad and Tobago)
International Sandwich Sunday

Original rating: 9
Plus up: Mango chutney
Plus up ratings: 9.5

Holy smokes, so much delicious complexity! Between the warm spices, peppers, and ginger it the chickpea filling was an explosion of flavor. Then you put that between two pieces of spiced fry bread? Come on! Many folks weighed with the idea that tamarind chutney would’ve worked better. Guess I’ll have to try it but the mango chutney was fantastic as well. One other note, a lot of folks indicated that the chickpea filling isn’t usually hot. So if you want to make this and are worried about heat, just dial it back however much you like. It will still be delicous.

Here’s the recipe I followed for the Doubles (mango chutney recipe is there too)

Anchovy and Smoked Salmon Sandwich (1924)
New Presentation of Cooking with Timed Recipes

Original rating: 3
Plus up: Sliced red onion and capers
Plussed up rating: 4

Whenever I come upon a recipe like this I go back and forth on whether they mean the little anchovies in the jar or the ones in the tin. Especially if it calls for them to be “in oil.” I opted for the little ones in a jar in oil this time. I may revisit using the tinned ones and see if makes a difference. As for this sandwich, while the butter and the smoked salmon helped, it was still way too salty. Adding sliced red onion helped a bit as did capers…at first. Unfortunately, capers are also a bit salty so, yeah.

Sausage and Oyster Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches

Original rating: 5
Plus up: Lemon juice
Plussed up rating: 6

Gotta love a cookbook that uses the term “sausage.” As if there’s only one. I don’t know maybe 1936 was different. I opted for a mild Italian but I can see the argument for using breakfast sausage. At any rate, this wasn’t a bad combo. A little fennel and some briny cooked oysters. If you think about it, just a few ingredients shy of oyster dressing (especially if I had used the other sausage). This was tasty and lightened a little with some freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Carmen Sandwich (1916)
Salads, Sandwiches, and Chafing Dish Recipes

Original rating: 5.5
Plus up: Green onions
Plussed up rating: 6

I think this sandwich would’ve benefitted from a thicker slice of ham. It would act to offset the amazing amount of dairy products used in it. I mean, it wouldn’t have solved the very construction issues. Still, it was tasty, just not something I’m keen to make again. The green onions were a nice plus up.

Love In The Cottage (1900)
The Sandwich Book

Original rating: 6
Plus up: Black Pepper
Plussed up rating: 6.5

The name Love In The Cottage really does sound like the 1900’s version of Afternoon Delight. Yet, the cottage being reference is cottage cheese which, when combined with crumbled bacon, green onion tops, tomato, and cucumber makes for a lovely sandwich. A simple plus up ground black pepper made it that much better.

Summer Sandwich (pre-1958)
Colonial Sandwich Book

Original rating: 4.5
Plus up: Old Bay Hot Sauce and seasoned slice of tomato
Plussed up rating: 6

The original version of this sandwich was boooooring. White fish mixed with cucumber and mayonnaise. Yawn. Plussed up with the two-for-one punch of Old Bay Hot Sauce and a slice of seasoned tomato. All of which brought some much needed flavor to the party. More than a few folks wondered if my whitefish they meant smoked whitefish. I can say that would make the original a far sight better but to be honesst, I have no way knowing if that’s what was intended.

Meat and Potatoes Sandwich (1882)
Miss Parloa’s New Cook Boook

Original rating: 4.5
Plus up: Toasted Acme Baking rosemary herb slab bread, smoky blues cheese, and pepperoncini
Plussed up rating: 6

Well, this was an interesting twist from 1882, the potato was the bread! Novel, fun, messy. What’s interesting is that after recording this I ran across another recipe from 1936 that is pretty similar. It called for ham and basically encase the meat with potatoes but other than that, the same. This was tasty if not a pain to eat. Adding some rosemary bread from Acme Baking, a little smokey blue cheese, and pepperoncini not only turned it into a real sandwich, but really tasty real sandwich.

In The Chips with Barry

Just one review this week and it was an odd one.

Urge Blueberry Dunker Donut flavored Potato Chips

Have to admit, I was skeptical when I saw these. Not because I don’t love a sweet savory combo (check out Barry’s Ice Cream O’Clock on Instagram or TikTok). No, my concern had to do with my past experience with potato chip flavors that try to ride that line. Most don’t do a good job. Here, they kinda did. Very sweet, artificial blueberry flavor up front (think IHOP blueberry syrup) that quickly gave way to potato and salt. It just kinda worked. Not sure blueberry is the flavor I wanted but the balance was surprisingly good. So, yeah, I finished the bag.
