Grandma’s Favorite Sandwich (1966)
Our History

Rating: 7
Plus up: None

Sometimes, you come across a sandwich that is exactly what it should be. In this case, the combo of bologna, peanut butter, mayonnaise, and dill pickle just worked. Really well. No plus up needed in my opinion.

Prune and Radish Sandwich Revisited (1951)
The Lunch Box and Every Kind of Sandwich

Rating:
Plus ups: Blue Cheese |Brie | Chinese Five Spice | Peanut Butter
Plussed up ratings: 5 1/2 | 6 1/2 | 6/12 | 7 1/2

You’ll remember in my original post for this sandwich, I was surprised by how much it worked. I was so flummoxed I wasn’t sure what to plus it with. So I turned to you and boy howdy did you deliver. I put the top four from across the platforms to the test and lo and behold, they all worked. Although one clearly worked the best. Thanks for the assist 🙌

Sliced Chicken Sandwich (1920)
Calendar of Sandwiches and Beverages

Rating: 6
Plus up: Baby spinach and blue cheese
Plussed up rating: 7

Yeah, I love flavored butters but his green pepper butter was not only a pain to make but it also barely delivered on flavor. Still, it was a tasty simple sandwich. Stop shy of turning into a Cobb Salad Sandwich (which is delicious btw) by adding spinach and blue cheese but not the bacon. Tasty stuff.

Sicily Sandwich (1901)
Recherché Side Dishes

Rating: 3 (4 if we didn’t have to sieve it)
Plus up: Maruno Rub
Plussed up rating: 5

Not gonna lie, kind of over having to shove sandwich fillings through sieves. Unfortunately, the food mill which would make the process go a million times faster wasn’t invented until 1928 so here we are. Flavorwise, the original was the sum of it’s parts. Plussed up with the Marunto seasoning? Much much better.

Valentine Layer Sandwich (1942)
Cut 20% From Your Food Bill

Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Curry powder and chopped walnuts
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

The base sandwich here was pretty tasty. I thought the spinach might be too much but turns out nope. Plussed it up with some walnuts for nuttiness and crunch and curry powder with it’s warm spices. Quite nice indeed.

Beef and Raisin Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches

Rating: 4 1/2
Plus up: Zwïta Harrisa
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2

The combo of beef, raisins, and peanuts was actually pretty tasty. I just wish the recipe didn’t call for so much salt. Had that been knocked down, the original sandwich would’ve probably been a solid 6. Plussed it up with some smoky Harissa which added warmth, spice, and which helped distract form the baseline saltiness.

Mecklenburger-Stulle mit herzhaftem Käse (Germany)
International Sandwich Sunday

Rating: 7
Plus up: Sliced red onion
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

A vegetarian sandwich from Germany? You betcha! And a tasty one at that. On a bread with more rye flour than not, spicy brown mustard, radishes, and hardboiled eggs, this was not for the shy palate. Nor was the recommend plus up of sliced red onion. Both versions were tasty but my breath after was not something I’d want anyone else to experience lol

In The Chips with Barry 🥔

President’s Choice Taco Potato Chips
Canada

Yeah, this “taco” flavor absolutely hewed to the Americanized hard shell tacos of my youth. And while I live authentic tacos like al pastor and carne asada, I will always have soft spot for this kind too. And man, did these chips deliver on that flavor.

Trader Joe’s Cashel Blue Cheese Irish Potato Chips
Ireland by way of United States

These were taaaaasty! I love blue cheese and these absolutely delivered. Now, I would bet dollars to donuts that these are made by Keogh’s for Trader Joe’s given they look and taste exactly the same. Still, if it makes it easier for folks to get their hands on ‘em, I am all for it.

Lay’s Sensations Mexican Peppers and Cream flavored Potato Chips
Netherlands

When I saw “Mexican peppers” it immediately gave me pause. After all, there is no combination of peppers from Mexico that folks call “Mexican peppers.” I was hoping to pick out an guajillo or chipotle but instead was more of generic green pepper with a little head added in. The cream, I believe, was intended to emulate crema. And there was a very slight tang to them. Not exactly sticking the landing but still enjoyable to eat.

Can It Sandwich?

I tested all three chip from the week and one sandwich that had all three at once. How’d it go? Check it out!

That’s it for this week. Thanks for watching and reading! Hope to see you on the road!

Cheers,
Barry 🥪
