Tomato & Egg Sandwich (1968)
Candlelight Tea

Sandwich Rating: 5
Plus up: Everything But The Bagel Seasoning Blend
Plussed up rating: 6

The slightly deceptively named sandwich had more than two ingredients. Mayonnaise, which acted a binder, and lettuce, which brought some texture and slight bitterness. Together, all four ingredents made for an ok sandwich but one that lacked seasoning. And while the Everything But The Bagel Seasoning Blend from Trader Joe's did liven things up, it wasn't enough make want to enjoy it again.

Should you make this? Maybe?

Lunch Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches

Sandwich Rating: 6 /12
Plus up: Dijon mustard and melty Swiss cheese
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

Some folks pointed out that eggs tend to be eaten for lunch and dinner far more often in Europe. While that is true, this cookbook was definitely written here in America for an American audience. Maybe they were trying to be sly schmancy? At any rate the onion, pickle relish, and eggs were tasty (though I'd prefer the onions cook a little for this application) but plussing it up with Dijon mustard and melty Swiss cheese really made it sing.

Should you make this? Yes, but plussed up version

Golden Buck (1910)
Louis' Every Woman's Cook Book

Sandwich Rating: 7
Plus up: Metric ton of black pepper
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

Basically a subpar Welsh Rarebit with a poached egg in top. It wasn't bad and did have a fair amount of richness. Plussing up worth a ton of black pepper livened things up a bit.

Should you make this? Naw

Triple Deck Clam and Ham Sandwich (1971)
The Midnight Cookbook

Sandwich Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: American Chip Spice
Plussed up rating: 8

This was a shocker for me. I never expected calm and ham to be in the same sandwich. Some dismissively called it "just a clam chowder sandwich." But to me the balance of the ham and the clam flavors were just more even. With clam chowder, the clams and the white sauce are playing the dominant role. Still, along with my construction notes, gives me an idea for a Recipe Remix™. That chip spice, which is really designed to go on potatoes worked brilliantly with eveything here.

Should you make this? Yes but maybe use all toast.

Jeff Daniels' Favorite Sandwich
Entertainment History

Sandwich Rating: 7
Plus up: Green onions
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

Usually, I have what sandwich I am going to post, when, well in advance. But every once in a while, a sandwich gets out in the ether and I feel compelled to jump on it. A ton of good folks were tagging me and sending me the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert's interview with actor Jeff Daniels. Specifically, The Colber Questionert whose first question is famously, "what is the best sandwich?" some celeb answer earnestly, some answer with a complete joke. Then there was Jeff's answer of pita bread, smeared with way too much creamy peanut butter, crumpled up Cheddar and Sour Cream Ruffles crumbled up, and BBQ sauce. So I couldn't tell if he was joking or not. Not too long a go I did an episode wherein I tested different BBQ sauces with peanut butter to see they'd work. And all did. So this didn't see like a stretch. Turns out, it was pretty ok. Plussed it up with some sliced green onion which worked well with everything in it.

Should you make this? Yeah, why not?

Gradma Junebug's Sandwich
Our History

Sandwich Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Estrella Cucumber and Sour Cream Potato Chips
Plussed up rating: 8

You may think a fried bologna sandwich is a fried bologna sandwich. Then comes along Grandma Junebug to shake things up. The used of mustard instead of mayi and fresh dill really serveed to brighten this sandwich. No to mention it was between toast for added texture and flavor. Plussed it up with some cucumber and sour cream potato chips which shook hands nicely with every other ingredient in there. So tasty

Shrimp and Pineapple Sandwich (1951)
The Lunch Box and Every Kind of Sandwich

Sandwich Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: Pimentos | Tajín | Pimentos & Tajín
Plussed up rating: 8 | 8 1/2 | 8

Every once in a great while one of the many plates that I am spinning at all times crashes to the floor. So, this was not an international sandwich. Oh well, it happens. At least there was a tasty sandwich to stand in. I dug it more plussed up with the pimentos but even more so with Tajín. Oddly enough the combo of pimentos and Tajín was as great as I was hoping for.

The Potato Chips 🥔

Evil Snacks Sriracha Lime Fried Musrhooms
Kicked things off last week, not with a potato chip, but with friend mushrooms (oyster mushrooms, specifically). These were tasty, spicy, and well balanced.

Charles Chips Salted Potato Chips
Pretty stoked to finally try these. Growing up, only the folks who paid to have the giant tin delivered got to enjoy these.

Estrella Cucumber and Sour Cream Potato Chips
These were fantastic. Tasted exactly of cucumber and sour cream but was well balanced with great potato flavor. A bit thing but still.

Well, that's it for this week. Thanks for watching and reading! I appreciate it.

Cheers,
Barry
