Get into it...with sandwiches & chips
Well, if isn't Monday again already. I swear there's a new one every week. This week some some surprising (in a very good way) sandwiches of our history. A fantastic guest host, and a failed experiment on In The Chips with Barry.

Debbie Sandwich
Our History
Rating: 8
Plus up™(s): Deep River Snacks Salt and Pepper Potato Chips
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
I must admit, this sandwich of our history was surprising in that it called for a lot of ingredients. Some of which seemed like they might not go together but the really did. Plussed up with the crunchy potatoey goodness of Deep River Snacks Salt and Pepper Potato Chips. Even better!

Hot Cheese Sandwich
Purity Cookbook 1932
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up™(s): Pickled hot peppers
Plussed up rating: 7
When I saw that this called for "cheese product," I wasn't exactly thrilled. But the addition of the mustard and Worcestershire sauce coaxed out some more flavor and the egg gave it a nice lightness. And, of course, there was smoky bacon. Turns out that was a fair amount of richness so naturally, I turned to something pickled and for kicks, hot as well. Tasty little number.

Nonna's Sandwich
Our History
Snack Rating: 8
Plus up™(s): Stracciatella | dried rosemary | Stracciatella and dried rosemary
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2 | 8 1/2 | 8
Epically straightforward yet very tasty. Focaccia, butter, and cherry jam. Tried two plus ups and a combo plus up. Despite the rating, I'd have to tip my hat to the rosemary plus up. Plussing it up with more fat, Stracciatella (which is the filling for burrata) was good but a bit overkill. And yeah, many, many ways to plus this one up.

Raisin and Nut Sandwich
Westminster Church Cook Book 1916
Tea Sandwich Rating: 5
Plus up™(s): Surinamese Masala seasoning blend
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
I was a little surprised by how much consternation this sandwich caused. In particular as to whether this was the kind of biscuit called for (one commentor went so far as to leave a nice condescendingly insulting remark that was 100% factually incorrect). The recipe called for "finger roll or tea biscuit" which sent me off to find out what they meant by tea biscuit in 1916. And well, this was it. The combo of nuts and raisins was find. The mayonnaise a little odd though I've had it in similar applications and it just becomes the binder and doesn't really add flavor. But it was a bit bland so I busted out some Surinamese Masala seasoning blend I had left over from a recent International Sandwich Sunday and boom, things got more insterstin.

Black Cat Sandwich, Part 2 w/Guest Host Robert Ottone
1,001 Sandwiches 1936
Rating: 7
Plus up™(s): Banana | Nutella | Garlic/Jalapeño stuffed olives
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2 | 5 | 8
I have to say, my man author Robert Ottone crushed his guest host appearance. Not only did he do a great job with the main sandwich but he also brought three plus ups! And, one of them absolutely seemed like it would be a monkey wrench but ended up winning! Awesome. If you're a horror reader, be sure to check out his latest book, Amityville Awakens.

Sam's Sandwich
our history
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up™(s): Roasted, salted (shelled, lol) pistachios
Plussed up rating: 7
For only three ingredients (four, if you count the English muffin), this punched well above it's weight. Creamy butter, sweet apricot preserves that had just a slight touch of bitterness, and tangy, brined feta cheese. Normally, I'd have leaned into a warm seasoning blend but I opted to plus it up with pistachios. And boy, am I glad I did.

Funeral Sandwich(es)
Ireland
Rating: 7
Plus up™(s): Keogh's Cheesy Onion crisps
Plussed up rating: 8
This was another in a long line of international sandwiches wherein some folks recognized it immediately and other commented that they were Irish, had lived there their entire lives and never heard of it. All I know is that there are a billion videos of it posted online by Irish folks so...At any rate, I was tagged by the fun women behind Kitchen Chapters (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook) recently and finally decided to give it a go. It was a nice, light, tasty ham and salad sandwich. Plus, I got to experience Aromat for the first time. Plussed it with some Keogh's Cheesy Onion potato crisps (fun fact: I first reviewed that flavor back when it was called Mature Irish Cheddar and Onion 6 years ago(!) on In The Chips with Barry). Added a little crunch and some great flavor too.

In The Chips with Barry
This past week I experimented with posting reviews as vertical videos, not just on Instagram and TikTok, but as Shorts on YouTube as well. It didn't really go how I had hoped so this week, I will be back to posting horizontal vids. That said, embedding the vertical videos here makes for one looooooong recap. So, they are linked below if you're keen to check em out:
- Snyder of Berlin BBQ Potato Chips
- Couch Potato Mustard Hot Dog Potato Chips
- Deep River Snacks Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips
and of course, Can It Sandwich?
Thank you for watching, commenting, reading – all of it!
Cheers,
Barry
