Who ordered the sandwich?
I've decide my favorite sandwich of the week will be the header image going forward. This week: Dean's Dad's Sandwich

And we are back, baby! Another week of sandwiches from cookbooks, sandwiches of our history, and, of course, and international sandwich too. Also, there's the wrap up of In The Chips with Barry plus a bonus from Barry Is Cooking Again! Also, gentle reminder, Sandwiches of History merch makes for a great gift plus you can get your holiday shopping done early. It's win-win

So, this is a long one and may get clipped. If you're not into the chips or cooking no need to "view in browser."

Montauk
Our History

Rating: 6
Plus up™(s): Pickled Red Onion and top piece of bread
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2

I mean, nothing wrong here, per se. Would've preferred cheddar but still, American cheese, tomato, and bacon wasn't bad. Opted for the pickely pop of red onions and a top piece of bread to plus it up into a sandwich that was both tastier and easier to eat.

Hot Beef Sandwich
Grazing Across Wisconsin 1991

Rating: 3
Plus up™(s): Kewpie mayo and Kinder BBQ Sauce
Plussed up rating: 5 1/2

If ever there was a recipe that screamed "RECIPE REMIX™!" it is this one. For context, here is the actual recipe:

Lots of folks weighed in that maybe the can of beer was bigger or that maybe they meant for it to be covered. Maybe but I didn't get any of that from the recipe so I did as I always do, make it as written. It produced the driest beef I've ever eaten saved only by the condiments and even then just barely. Plussed it up with two more condiments. One, the Kewpie mayo, was intentionally full of fat. But both did help.

Richie's Brother's Sandwich
our history

Rating: 2
Plus up™(s): Crunchy peanut butter
Plussed up rating: 2

Hard to imagine that this would be worse than the previous sandwich but for me the tang of A1 Sauce absolutely clashed with the grape jelly. Take one of those out and it would totally work. I tried to plus it up with the great sweet/savory uniter, peanut butter. Nope. Didn't make it worse but also didn't help.

Torch's Fireball Sandwich
Mighty Marvel Superheroes' Cookbook 1977

Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up™(s): Frank's RedHot and melted pepperjack cheese
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2

A Sloppy Joe by any other name is still a Sloppy Joe. And this was a Sloppy Joe. And, since it was geared toward kids' palates, a pretty bland one. It wasn't bad but plussing it up with a little Frank's RedHot and melted pepperjack cheese brought a little heat and a little richness which was nice.

Shrimp, Provolone, and Pimiento Sandwich
Midnight Cookbook 1971

Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up™(s): Old Bay Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 8

This was a tasty combo. The shrimp, mayo, pimientos, capers, and lemon worked very well together and the melted provolone just leveled it up even more. That said, not sure it needs to be in the fridge for hour given that all of the ingredients are already cooked. Plussed it up with a the one-two punch of Old Bay seasoning with a little heat. So good on seafood and chicken!

Dean's Dad's Sandwich
our history

Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up™(s): pepperjack cheese
Plussed up rating: 8

This was also a nice combo of flavors too! Some folks commented that I used way too much Vegemite but I disagree. We had the fat of the avocado and the egg plus the strong flavors from the Everything But The Bagel seasoning. I will concede that were it just Vegemite and butter on toast, waaaaay too much. Plussed it up with our ingredient buddy from Thursday, pepperjack cheese, which was a nice touch.

Batbout Farci au Thon (Morocco)

International Sandwich Sunday

Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up™(s): Fresh parsley and fermented Calabrian chili paste
Plussed up rating: 7

This fun although the filling was surprisingly under-seasoned given that it originated in Morocco. But it was still tasty and made even tastier with the fresh parsley and fermented Calabrian chili paste (should have been harissa but what are ya gonna do? I can't have every condiment on hand like the Food Network)

In The Chips with Barry

The opening gambit for Pringles of China Super Hot Week. While these did indeed have a chili lemon crab flavor, all three were just kind of there. Not their worst but certainly not their best either.

I thought, given the illustration on the front of the package, that "Spicy Strips" was a mistranslation of bacon or pork belly. Turns out, nope. That's the name of the vegetarian snack sold in China (that is indeed smoky). If I had to pick a winner this week, these would be it, hands down.

And last but not least, Spicy Crayfish flavor. Not bad but had that sort of "seafood" flavor on potato chips from Asia and the heat, while there, was nowhere near 5 out of 5 chilis.

Let's find out together, shall we?

Barry Is Cooking Again

I've had these two recipes saved separately for a while now and I thought, why not combine them. Both were super easy, super tasty, and super flexible when it comes to what flavor direction you might want to the in.

Well, that is it for last week. I hope this is a great week for you and I will see you next Monday! Thanks for watching and reading!

Cheers,
Barry
