Sandwiches of History: A Recap
Time again to take a fond look back at the sandwiches of last week. Perhaps you've seen them all or only seen a few thanks to algorithmic shenanigans, this recap has you covered. And for good measure, In The Chips with Barry episodes as well.
Folks who are paying subscribers here, Instagram (in-app only), TikTok (in-app only), and on YouTube (Double Decker level) each at $2.99/month, can "look forward" to the following exclusive videos in 2026: Hot Beer Soup (1970s), Florida Spinach (1920s), Black Oyster Soup (1887), a Graza Mayonnaise review, A Ragout of Eggs (1803), The President’s Christmas Cake (1911), and an Oyster Soup from 1777. Fret not, the daily sandwich videos have been, are, and will be free for all to watch.
Over on Barry Is Cooking Again (Instagram and YouTube only), which is also completely free and where I make recipes I've saved online, my plan for the rest of 2026 includes Crunchy Parmesan Potato Wedges, Poor Man’s Oyster Rockefeller, Tacos Gobenador, a 10 minute chili peanut ramen, Yukgaejang (Korean Spicy Beef Stew), and one more that is TBD
Ok, let's get into it!

Afterschool Snackwich
Our History
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up™(s): Cinnamon
Plussed up rating: 7
When someone writes in with a sandwich recipe that includes the context of "ex-hippie mom," it runs the risk of being healthy but not great. Not here. Peanut butter, apple, a touch of honey and little wheat germ (for good measure) on whole wheat bread. The apple provided a nice texture and sweetness. Plussed it up with one of apple's best friends, cinnamon. Yum

Scrambled Egg Roll
A Book of Tasty Sandwiches 1920
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up™(s): St. Agur Blue Cheese and Chives
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
Yeah, I still cannot get over how each recipe in this cookbook sounds like it might be horrific yet ends up being super tasty. Here we cook scrambled eggs with Bovril mixed in them. And while the look wasn't great, the flavor was. Plussed it up with my favorite blue cheese and some snipped chives and I was off to the races (as no one says).

Babysitter Sandwich
Our History
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up™(s): Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Plussed up rating: 8
I mean, hard to go wrong with a fried bologna sandwich of any kind. But add in mustard, mayo, and a seasoned slice of tomato and serve it between toast? No brainer. Plussed it up with a little extra sharp cheddar cheese for good measure. Man, none of my babysitters made tasty things like this.

Wiener and Egg Sandwich
1,001 Sandwiches 1936
Rating: 6
Plus up™(s): Pickled Pepperoncini
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Once again we find ourselves with a sandwich filling in which all ingredients are ground together. Sure, you get a pretty consistent flavor profile in every bite but it also falls out all over the place. Overall though, it tasted fine. Pickled pepperoncini plus up to give a little pop. Nice, but not making this again.

Baltimore Pit Beef Sandwich
Regional History 1970s
Rating: 9
Plus up™(s): None
I've had this on my to-d0 list for years. Mainly because I had it in my head that it would more complex than it was. Basically rub a cut of beef with seasoning, let it sit overnight in the fridge, then grill roast it. Easy peasy. Top with that horseradishy Tiger Sauce and a few sliced white onion and boom, you're locked in. Some folks question how can you not plus up a sandwich but only give it a 9. Well, this sandwich was fantastic but it did lack a little complexity that might've gotten it to a ten. Thing is, I didn't know what would bring that to the sandwich. And everything that came to mind just seemed superfluous. So, no plus up and a 9 rating.

Banaan Tosti
Our History
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up™(s): Aleppo chili flakes
Plussed up rating: 8
I was not expect to like this anywhere near as much as I did. Banana and cheese? But when it was all said and done it was pretty tasty. Plussed it up with the fruity heat of a little Aleppo pepper to live things up a bit.

Steak Sanga (Australia)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 9
Plus up™(s): None
For as much as the Baltimore Pit Beef Sandwich wasn't as complicated as I thought, this one absolutely was. I've heard from some folks that this recipe was a bit over the top, some said it was spot on, some said it was missing a fried egg. When it comes to international sandwiches, there are always multiple angle. This was a lot but pretty tasty despite the presence of pickled beetroot. And like the Baltimore Pit Beef Sandwich, I didn't fell a plus up was needed (though that egg would've been tasty). And again, while tasty, it didn't quite have enough complexity for me to call it a 10.

In The Chips with Barry

Spicy, Masala seasoning on popcorn? Um yes, please.

I already have a problem stopping myself from eating too many pistachios at a time. And you want to bring dill pickle flavor into the mix?!

Nicely balanced between the heat of wasabi (more than likely horseradish) and shrimp.

That's a good question. Let's find out!
Thank you for watching and reading! I appreciate it!
Cheers,
Barry
