A fond look back...at sandwiches
Well, I am back from my little road trip. Sandwiches of History: A Dining Experience was a success with both nights selling out! It was my first attempt at doing a live event were folks got to actually taste sandwiches of history. Seven Acre Dairy is a great venue even if it felt like it might be too remote in Paoli, Wisconsin (clearly not). Paying subscriber can check out a little behind the scenes video I posted yesterday.
Then came Sandwiches of History: One Tasty Night. While we only sold about 52 tickets, the fundraiser was not only a lot of fun but we managed to raise $12,500 for Brooklyn Org. Garret Oliver (Brooklyn Brewery Brewmaster) and Sother Teague (world renown cocktail expert), and I had such a great time we're talking about maybe taking it on the road to help out mutual aid orgs in other cities. Stay tuned!.

Turkey Sandwich (1891)
Lizzie's Cook Book
Sandwich rating: 4 1/2
Plus up: Chicken seasoning and tomato
Plussed up rating: 6
Finally, the great taste of turkey paired with the exciting and dynamic flavor of cottage cheese...said no one ever. Not that I hate cottage cheese but this was a blandish sandwich from the get-go. Plussed up with a little chicken seasoning and tomato helped but yeah, not making this one again.

Swiss Porky (1965)
The 1,000 Fabulous Sandwiches
Sandwich rating: 8
Plus up: Dill pickles
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2
This was one of those layup sandwiches. Cheese with bacon then the Grilled Cheese Treatment™? Um yeah, no brainer. Plussed it up with the bright flavor of a dill pickled to contrast with the richness and it was a-ok. Would absolutely make this again.

North Carolina Cold Beef Sandwich (1915)
"Dame Curtsey's" Book of Salads, Sandwiches, and Beverages
Sandwich rating: 7
Plus up: North Carolina BBQ Sauce
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
Since posting, I've learned that around the time the cookbook was published there was a push to make North Carolina the center of cattle raising. Given how pork absolutely rules the state, I'd say it was an abject failure. At any rate, this was a nice combo of ingredients including beef, pimentos, olives, and mayonnaise plus two different kinds of bread! Given I saw no direct link to North Carolina in the original sandwich, I plussed it up with a little North Carolina BBQ sauce.

Sandwich Filling Number 2 (1913)
Club Woman's Cook Book
Sandwich rating: 1
Plus up: None
When I saw that this was going to be an egg sandwich that featured curry powder I was all in. That is until I read that we were to "boil the eggs for one hour." Yeah, no. It was all sulphur all the time. Hard pass (but would be good with properly cooked eggs)

Tongue and Cheese Sandwich (1944)
Woman's Home Companion Cook Book
Sandwich rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Nutmeg and Grilled Cheese Treatment™
Plussed up rating: 6
They were soooo close with this one. If you can get past eating tongue (which I seem to have done oddly fast), this was essentially a beef and cheese sandwich albeit a cold one. Added the warm spice that is nutmeg and naturally gave it the Grilled Cheese Treatment™

Granny's Deviled Ham Sandwich
our history
Sandwich rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Colman's mustard and white onion
Plussed up rating: 6
Underwood Deviled Ham is already a bit fatty and salty. Combined with Duke's mayonnaise it got even richer. Tasty, but richer. So I opted to cut through that a bit with some sharp Colman's mustard and white onion (guess I kept the plus ups on theme for a granny sandwich, huh?). Provide a nice contrast and some texture.

Solomo (Spain
International Sandwich Sunday
Sandwich rating: 9
Plus up: Parsley
Plussed up rating: 9 1/2
This is one of those sandwiches that required a little work and little patience since the pork loin had to marinate for three days. But it was all worth it. Grill roasted and put between grilled bread slather in peppery mayonnaise with Manchego cheese and roasted red bell peppers, it was soooo tasty. Plussed it up with a little parsley but easily could've gone with arugula.
Btw, this is the recipe I followed.

In The Chips with Barry
Can't say as though I've had a "zinger wing" but it doesn't take much to imagine what it might taste like. That said, these were just ok. Not worth chasing down tbh,
These were tasty though the tofu flavor never really showed up. And yes, tofu has a flavor (especially if it's freshly made). Just that the other flavors were stronger. Still, a well done salted egg yolk flavored potato chip.
Definitely one of the better bacon flavored potato chips I've tasty. Too bad they had to come all the way from Ukraine.
Well, can it?
Thanks for watching and reading! I greatly appreciate it. See you next week.
Cheers,
Barry
