Shrimp Sandwich (1936)
1,001 Sandwiches
Tea sandwich rating: 5.5
Plus up: Mayonnaise
Plussed up rating: 6
Well, I got to make Graham bread for the first time and it came out...ok? It's like a less intense, less sweet Boston brown bread (BBB also uses rye flour in addition to regular flour). This sandwich was odd in that it had no real binder. So, I plussed it up with a little mayonnaise which improved it quite nicely.

Welsh Rarebit (1902)
Ideal Cook Book
Sandwich rating: 5
Plus up: Grilled Cheese Treatment™ using spicy sesame oil
Plussed up rating: 6
Almost every recipe I've seen for Welsh Rarebit call for a cheese sauce made with ale poured over toast. I did say almost because this was not that. A tasty cheeses sandwich if not a little boring. Plussed it up with some spicy sesame oil and the Grilled Cheese Treatment™ to lively it up a bit.

Tomato and Bacon Sandwich (1955)
Three Meals A Day
Sandwich rating: 8
Plus up: St. Agur Blue Cheese
Plussed up rating: 8.5
I saw this recipe and thought it would fun to do since it is clearly almost identical to a BLT yet is not named as such. And while not toasted, it was tasty. Plussed it up with one of my favorite blue cheeses, St. Agur. Went so well with everything in there.

#TBT - Hula Burger (1960s)
McDonald's
Sandwich rating: 4 starrs
Plus up: This was before I started plussing up sandwiches
This was one of the earliest sandwiches where I was convinced it was going to suck but then tasted it and was pleasantly surprised. Not to mention getting a look at how different Sandwiches of History was then. Different angle, used a 5 star rating, said "let's give this a try," didn't plus it up at all...I mean, it was a lot. Lol

Pickle Hamburger (1950s)
Canada Dry Ginger Ale Advertisement
Sandwich rating: 7.5
Plus up: Chopped white onion
Plussed up rating: 8
This was a fun one. I wasn't sure if the beef would stick to the pickle but it did! So many ways to plus up this bad boy but I kept it simple with chopped white onions. So good. You should make this one.

Swiss Cheese & Ketchup Sandwich
a sandwich of our history
Sandwich rating: 5.5
Plus up: Broiling the bottom and pan grilling the top
Plussed up rating: 6.5
Epically simple with just two ingredients, Swiss cheese and ketchup, but at least they brought some flavor to the party. Plussed it up by melting the cheese and pan grilling the ketchup laden top to give it a little more depth. Turned out pretty good!

Bread Omelette Sandwich
International Sandwich Sunday
Sandwich rating: 8.5
Plus up: Mango chutney
Plussed up rating: 9
When Madhev recommended this sandwich for International Sandwich Sunday I had to double check. I remember seeing those viral videos a few years back that used the same technique. Well, turns out it is legit Indian street food. And I must say, like a lot of street food, it was quite tasty. Plussed it up with some mango chutney to bring in some sweet the balance the heat. Worked like a charm.

In The Chips with Barry 🥔
Kicked things off last week with some beef tallow cooked potato chips. What made these chips from Roots stand out, aside from the fact that the beef tallow came from 100% grass fed cows, was that they used purple potatoes and that the company is farmer owned. Didn't hurt that they were delicious.
Deep River Snacks back at it with another absolute banger. Great cheddar flavor and the hammer of horseradish.
I've had Mrs. H.S. Ball's Chutney in my fridge for a while. So when I had the opportunity to snag these Simba chips from South Africa I took it. Turns out, they did a great job of transferring the chutney flavor (of course, I had bust out the real thing to compare).
With those three flavors above, you gotta know the all in one sandwich was a bit bonkers, right?
Well, that's all for last week. Tune in again next week for more sandwiches and chips! Thanks for watching and reading!
Cheers,
Barry
