A Sandwich By Any Other Name

Not sure what that title means but there it is. This week's sandwiches ran the gamut from marmite to a Dagwood that used all the ingredients. Some tasty, other less so, but none got binned so we've got that going for us. I also shared an odd, humorous (at least it was to me) tech glitched slo-mo version of the Savory Roast Beef Sandwich linked here, in case you haven't seen it. I also had something happen wherein Can It Sandwich? was either deleted or not recorded. I'm doing great! Lol

It's always fun to try out a plausible sandwich from a work of fiction. In this case sandwich came to us from the Skandar young adult book series by way of Imogen who asked if I'd do it. The combo of marmite, raspberry jam, and cheddar cheese was not bad tbh (and no, it didn't stink). Plussed up by giving the Grilled Cheese Treatment™ helped meld the flavors a bit better. Not a home run, but not bad.

First, I just want to express how grateful I am that this recipe did not call for canned asparagus. I know some folks dig it but my palate does not. The fresh just cooked asparagus played nicely with the crunchy celery, sweet pimentos, and mayonnaise. But it needed a little somethin' somethin'. And that came in the form of lemon juice (to brighten it up a bit) and black pepper (to give a little bite).

Have to admit, for 1920, this had a lot going on. From the mustard butter to what essentially was a cocktail sauce added to the roast beef, I was kind of expecting the original sandwich to be great. It was good, but great? Not really. Plussed it up with some peppery arugula which helped bring a little more dimension to it.

This was a very good sandwich. I'm not convinced, however, that it should use wax paper (even if the waxed side is out) nor that it needed to be cooked in an oven for an hour and a half. Still, the combo of flavors was good and teed up perfectly for some SoH x NEWKS Collabrian Plus Up Hot Sauce if I do say so myself.

Part two of our three part Dagwood Sandwich contest winners from the Sioux Fall Argus Leader newspaper from 1957. Another ridiculous and ridiculously hard to eat sandwich. Although the banana was odd, it was ok. But yeah, never making it again.

This was nice, light, refreshing combination of cheese, pickles, apples, and more that really felt like it needed nothing else. I should not when I opt not to plus up a sandwich, it doesn't mean that sandwich is a ten. Just that adding stuff to it might end up making it taste not quite as good.

This was a fun little number. Sweet, boiled shrimp paired with crisp red apple and umami-laden Kewpie mayonnaise crimped between bread and toasted. It was pretty simple but tasty. I opted to add Chinese Five Spice to kind of help bridge the sweet/savory divide and it worked like a charm.

In The Chips with Barry

These were a little nondescript save for a savory base. Not bad, but not terribly distinctive.

After hearing about The Gentleman's Relish over on Sandwiches of History, I was expecting this to have a distinct anchovy flavor. Nope. But it was savory and pretty ok so there's that?

These were taaaasty. Mushrooms and sour cream on potatoes? Uh, yeah.

There was no Can It Sandwich? as I either accidentilly deleted to the footage or forgot to hit record. All of them did sandwich as did all three in one. But the best was the mushroom potato chips from Ukraine. So good.
