Book of Tasty Sandwiches (1920)

Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Black pepper and green onion
Plussed up rating: 7

Who'd have thunk a beef extract paste and egg would taste good together. The folks at Bovril sure did. And they were not wrong. And umami egg salad, if you will. Plussed up with little black pepper and green onions which perked things up nicely.

Special Sandwiches (The Netherlands) (1989)

Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up: None

I did go back and forth as whether or not I should do this for International Sandwich Sunday. But I figured it was a great example of exoticism in naming only this time America was on the receiving end. When I read the ingredients list (sauerkraut and ketchup?!), I though it was a fever dream of an idea. Well, everything worked really well together. So much so that I didn't even feel compelled to plus it up.

Handy Household Hints and Recipes (1916)

Plus up: Everything But The Bagel seasoning blend
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2

If ever there was a sandwich with a huge potential for plussing up it's this one. I mean, cream cheese in a toasted sandwich is tasty but straightforward. I opted for the Everything But The Bagel seasoning from Trader Joe's but really so many options still left to explore on this.

The Calendar of Beverages and Sandwiches (1920)

Rating: 7
Plus up: Seasoned slice of tomato
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

Even though making the cooked salad dressing is kind of annoying, at least this one (unlike every other recipe I've made) was well balanced. Usually it over-indexes on sweet, salty, or sour. And it worked well with the roasted pork. Plussed it up with a little fresh tomato and black pepper which helped freshen it up a bit.

Sioux Falls Argus-Leader (1957)

Rating: 4
Plus up: None

There's a reason this one was the honorable mention winner in a Dagwood sandwich recipe contest. While it was an "empty the fridge" style like a Dagwoods should be, there were parts in there I'd have left out...like the bananas and orange, for example. And it was impossible to eat withoug it falling out all over the place. Can't wait to tackle the runner up and winner in a little while.

Plus up: Cocktail onions
Plussed up rating: 7

I had a feeling this might've worked. Even though Cheez Whiz isn't the healthiest product, it still does taste like cheese. So it was going to work with the salami. And the Goldfish? More texture and slight cheese flavor. Using cocktail onions as the plus up definitely provided a nice sharp contrast to all the richness.

Plus up: Chinese pickled radishes
Plussed up rating: 8 1/2

This was a bit of work but worth it. The bagel-esque sesame bun, the sweet/savory pork belly. What's not to like. Opted to plus it up with some pickled radish that brought a nice bite and a little heat too.

In The Chips with Barry

Despite my love for sweet/savory combos I was a little on the fence about this flavor. Then I tasted it.

While I've had some Brazilian food and been to the country several times, I've never had Brazilian-Style Garlic Sauce. After tasting these, I need to correct that.

Not gonna lie, I never expected to kumquat as potato chips flavor. Ever. And yet here we are. And it was pretty tasty.

The reason to watch this week is the all in one. Trust me.

That's the news that fit to email from last week. See you again next week for more sandwiches and chips! Thanks for watching and reading.

Cheers,
Barry
