Let's do the recap again 🎶

Let's do the recap again 🎶

Welcome back to another weekly recap. Last week saw the comeback of an odd sandwich but thankfully (for me, anyway) nothing awful. It also came with the first new merch in a while. You can get yours here!

In other news, I am finding it very difficult to make time to test recipes for the new cookbook. I am recording like crazy so that while I am on the road for the Sandwiches of History tasting events I can still post daily. The first ones, Sandwiches of History: A Dining Experience, are in Paoli, Wisconsin April 29th and 30th. And the third will be in Brooklyn (details coming, I promise) on May 6th. I guess it's good to be busy doing fun stuff though, right?

Fairmont Ham Sandwich (1945)
Three Meals A Day

Sandwich rating: 7
Plus up: New Mexico Hot and Spicy Red Chili potato chips
Plussed up rating: 7.5

Ham salad, meet egg salad. Egg salad, meet ham salad. The base sandwich was pretty good. The fact that it had lemon juice in it made me think of the New Mexico Red Chili potato chips as chili and lemon go together so well. Sure enough, bingo!

Grilled Cheese Sandwich (1955)
Good Housekeeping Cook Book

Sandwich rating: 7
Plus up: Deviled Ham | Mustard | BBQ Sauce
Plussed up rating: 7.5 | 8 | 8

This was a fun one. First of all, the base is a regular grilled cheese sandwich. But then the recipe provided three options too! All three did make for a more interesting grilled cheese experience but gotta give to mustard and BBQ sauce for the win. Does make me want to try it with a mustard based BBQ sauce now...hmm.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich (1955)
Good Housekeeping Cook Book

Sandwich rating:
Plus up: Lemon zest and black pepper
Plussed up rating:

Despite the name, there was nothing terribly special about this sandwich. Not to say it was bad, just, you know, a tuna salad sandwich. Perked things up nicely by plussing it up with lemon zest and black pepper.

TBT Toast Sandwich (1865)
Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management

Sandwich rating: 3.5
Plus up: Thin slice of beef | Shawarma butter
Plussed up rating: 5 | 6

Ah yes, another TBT. I will say, if I were ailing and unable to handle rich or highly seasoned foods, this sandwich would be very welcome. It wasn't horrible though not something I'd crave. The suggestion by Mrs. Beeton to add a thin slice of ham helped but slathering the outside with shawarma butter and giving the Grilled Cheese Treatment™ really set it off. Of course, that would not fly with the original target audience for this as it is both highly seasoned and rich. Lol

Preacher Sandwich (1930)
Edgewater Sandwich and Hors d’oeuvres Book

Sandwich rating: 7
Plus up: Dill pickles
Plussed up rating: 7.5

In the video I mention that I have no idea why this sandwich had the name it did. Well, thanks to a lot of you, I now know that preachers would often travel around and visit homes and that the common thing to feed them was fried chicken. This recipe was a nice shortcut wherein the chicken was already cooked but you still kind of got a fried chicken taste without the mess and time involved. Naturally, had perk things up with a dill pickle plus up.

PBB& J
A sandwich of you history

Sandwich rating: 6.5
Plus up: Frying up the bologna w/peanut butter and jelly on it
Plussed up rating: 7.5

Having experience the joy of peanut butter on a hot dog, I knew this was going to be tasty as well. Every time I do a bologna sandwich and it doesn't call for frying up the bologna, a lot of folks say that I should have done so. But I follow recipes as written and alway kind of thought that once the sandwich was made, pulling it apart to fry the bologna wouldn't work. Well, this time I went for it and I am glad I did. Both the peanut butter and jelly caramelized a bit adding a nice flavor.

Stjerneskud (Denmark)
International Sandwich Sunday

Sandwich rating: 10
Plus up: None

Yes, this sandwich was a ton of work. But I am reasonably sure they are consumed exclusively at restaurant as opposed to made in Danish home kitchens. Fish prepared two ways, boiled shrimp, trout roe, cucumbers, a nice dressing, fresh dill, and a squeeze of lemon? Yeah, no plus up need for me, thanks.

In The Chips with Barry

These had a great balance between the sweet mango and fruity heat of habanero. Plus you could taste the potatoes too.

I can't honestly say that I've never had "artificial turkey noodle" so I wasn't sure how these stacked up. They were savory and pretty ok though.

I've done a fair amount of non-chip snacks over the years but for some reason, I think this is the first time that beef jerky made an appearance. Of course, they were all spicy but they were all really, really good!

Well, that's all she wrote for last week. More tasty vittles coming in the week ahead including a Tongue-Curry Sandwich from 1936. Yep!

Cheers,
Barry
