Time once again for the weekly recap of sandwiches and chips that were. Also had a bonus video this week. Woot! Let's get to it:

1,001 Sandwiches (1936)

Rating: 3
Plus up: Berbere seasoning
Plussed up rating: 5 1/2

Not sure if this would've been better with cheese as opposed to cream cheese but either way, the combo of tongue, cream cheese, and grape jelly (yes, it speficied grape jelly) was not exactly a winner. Plussed it up with berebre seasoning which brought in some warm spices and heat. Better but not enough to make me want to ever make it again.

The Burly Earl (bar)

Rating: 8
Plus up: Cel-ray soda cocktail with pickle brine and gin
Plussed up rating: 9

My man Sother did a sandwich of his history and since it was from a bar in the south, it was naturally deep fried. Sounded tasty if not heavy but he cut through that with a Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray soda based cocktail which I need to try soon.

Modern Ways with Ancient Food (1929)

Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Bomba seasoning blend
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

This was akin to merging a grilled cheese and tomato soup into a sandwich willing. The "cream farina" or Cream of Wheat acted to thicken the tomato puree so that could happen. Plussed up with a dry Bomba seasoning blend which had Calabrian chilis, fennel seeds, and more which worked great with the filling.

Meals for the Million (1882)

Thursday, May 28, 2026
Tea sandwich rating: 8
Plus up: basil, dill, and lemon juice
Tea sandwich plussed up rating: 9

Butter! This was pretty rich but also pretty tasty. Smoked salmon, butter, and black pepper? Yes please. Plussed it up with some herbs and lemon juiced (inspired by Turkey and The Wolf's The Tomato) So tasty!

America Cooks (1967)

Finished with : Blue cheese herb mustard, lettuce, pickle
Plussed up rating: 8

Interesting preparation on this one. Sandwiching thin slices of onion and tomato between thin patties of ground beef, then cooked. Obviously that didn't cook either the tomato or the onion but the heat did soften em a bit. Plussed up, or more accurately finished with, that tasty blue cheese herb mustard I picked up at the National Mustard Museum, a little lettuce, and dill pickle.

Plus up: Mango chutney
Plussed up rating: 7

This sandwich definitely passed the vibe check for a grandma/grandpa sandwich. Hard salami, cheese, and peanut butter between toasted bread. But, as you know, I am a fan of peanut butter with meat and cheese so this worked for me. Plussed it up with a little mango chutney which brought a nice sweet/savory element to it.

Plus up: Kewpie mayonnaise
Plussed up rating:

This was ridiculously tasty. The nutty whole wheat bun played really nicely with the citrusy, spicy, highly seasoned chicken, tomato, and onion. Just needed a little richness. Some folks suggested raita and I have to agree, that would've been great. I opted for the much more convenient Kewpie mayo.

Bonus video!
In case you missed it, when I was in Wisconsin recently I had a chance to visit Baumgartner's Cheese Shop for a Limburger Cheese Sandwich and Tavern as well as Chalet Cheese Co-op, the last plant in America that still makes Limburger cheese.

In The Chips

These were nicely done. I was not aware that I need smokey mustard flavor in my life but boy howdy do I. The only potential pitfall of these would've been if they over indexed on the sweet. Thankfully, they did not.

I dig chimichurri so I was pretty stoked to check these out. While Lay's didn't exactly stick the landing on that or the steak flavor, they still managed to make a tasty savory potato chip.

Well, the bag shows Swiss cheese but the chips didn't deliver that. They did deliver a butter cheese flavor and that was not bad.

Well can it?

That's it for last week. Tune in next week for more recap action! And as always, thanks for watching and reading.

Cheers,
Barry
