The Week That Were
Welcome back to the weekly recap. A fond trip down memory lane from...last week. Ok, it's not all that nostalgic but hey if you missed any of them it's an easy way to catch up, no?

Slaw Surprise Sandwich
Winning Sandwiches for Menu Makers (1976)
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up™(s): Franklin BBQ Sauce
Plussed up rating: 7
This sandwich with it's turkey, bacon, and slaw was tasty albeit not really too far off from the New Jersey Sloppy Joe (which, if you're not familiar, is nothing like a regular Sloppy Joe). Opted to plus it up with a little smoky sweet BBQ sauce from Franklin BBQ in Austin, Texas.

Minced Ham Sandwich, French Style
The Wonder Sandwich Book (1928)
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up™(s): Pepper Jelly
Plussed up rating: 6
Flavor-wise, this sandwich wasn't bad. Ham, mustard, and a little French Toast action tasted pretty good (though to be honest, it does not make for the most stable sandwich). But it was yet another example of sandwich that had us finely chop the main filling but didn't call for any sort of binding ingredient. Plussed it up the sweet heat of pepper jelly which work nicely with all of the flavors.

Cream Cheese and Ginger Sandwich
Rumford Complete Cook Book (1943)
Tea Sandwich Rating: 8 1/2
Plus up™(s): Chinese Five Spice seasoning blend
Plussed up rating: 9
This was fantastic. The sweet, slightly tangy cream cheese was a great base for the flavor of the orange zest and juice. All of which went really well with the sweet zip of candied ginger. Not contently to leave well enough alone, I plussed it up with Chinese Five Spice which brought some warm spices into the mix. And which always goes great with orange and ginger.

Sandwich with American Chese à la Barnegat
Mrs. Ericsson Hammond’s Salad Appetizer Cook Book (1924)
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up™(s): Dill pickle
Plussed up rating: 6
This was one of the odder grilled cheese style recipes that I've seen. With it's double toasting and use of two different preparation methods for one flavor of cheese, it was definitely an outlier. Not bad but phenomenal. Plussed it up with a little dill pickle as I always love dill pickle in a grilled cheese.

Hot Ham Sandwich
Congressional Club Cook Book (1927)
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up™(s): Kinder BBQ Sauce
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2
After the sandwich on Tuesday that had us mince ham but use no binder, I thought I should give this a go. After all, it called for mustard as the binder! It still suffered structurally from the French Toast treatment but it was tasty. Made even tastier by way of some sweet smoky BBQ sauce that went well with the ham and the mustard.

Granny Sandwich
A sandwich of our history
Rating: 6
Plus up™(s): Sandwiches of History Hot Sauce Collabrian Plus Up Hot Sauce
Plussed up rating: 7
As you know, I'm not a fan of Miracle Whip. Thankfully, it receded into the background. I think that had more to do with the ratio of Miracle Whip relative to the egg and cheese. Plussed it up with my Collabrian Plus Up Hot Sauce with it's Calabrian chilis, basil and mid-level heat. What can I say? I like it.

Erteb (Ethiopia)
International Sandwich Sunday
Rating: 7 1/2
Plus up™(s): Melted sharp cheddar cheese
Plussed up rating: 8
I love the warm, spicy berbere seasoning blend from Ethiopia. So when I saw it was used twice in this recipe I was all in. Hard to go wrong when the recipe starts with frying potatoes, right? Super flavorful. Plussed it up with a little melted sharp cheddar because it sounded like it would go great with everything in the sandwich. And it did! Woot! Oh and I found out after posting that the sandwich is just called Erteb as "aserar" apparently just means "make." The more you know!

In The Chips with Barry
Last week I decide to do three different Salt and Vinegar flavored potato chips/snacks. I kicked things off with these which had the unique addition of a bit of serrano pepper added. Pretty tasty though not a big vinegar bite.
Midweek saw me checking out these Sea Salt and Vinegar Chiplets from Kuwait. Tasty little formed snacks that did have a little vinegar bite.
And wrapped things up with these from Deep River Snacks. These did have the bite you want from Salt and Vinegar potato chips but it was nicely balanced as well.
Well, that is a wrap on last week. More to come this week and there will be a Barry Is Cooking Again vid as well! Thanks for watching and subscribing.
Cheers,
Barry
