So international...

Sorry about the headline. I am writing this on Monday just an hour or so before goes out and still have coffee. We just got back from a 24 hour turn up in Seattle for our friend's daughter's wedding. Still arduously working on the second cookbook whilst keeping the daily sandwich and tri-weekly potato chips posts going is a grind. Albeit, a tasty one.

Quick heads up. Sandwiches of History X NEWKS Hot Sauce Collabrian Plus Up Hot Sauce batch number two is available (in case you've been holding off)

Ok, on to the sandwiches that were!

Mel Brooks, baby!

Many folks pointed out that this favorite sandwich of Mel Brooks was similar to the New Jersey Sloppy Joe and they are not wrong. This was just a nice combo of turkey, cole slaw, mustard, and the odd slice of corned beef. I dug it.

Plus up(s): We shall see lol

No gonna lie, baking a whole banana (in the peel) was not something I thought I'd ever do let alone do it for a sandwich featuring roast beef and unsweetened whipped cream. Yet that's exactly what this sandwich was. Not bad, just...odd? Will be revisiting this one shortly with the top four most often mentioned plus ups from the comments as I was flummoxed.

Sioux Falls Argus-Leader Newspaper

Plus up(s): Spicy brown mustard
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

Wrapped up the triumvirate of Dagwood sandwiches sent in to the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader newspaper back in 1957 for their Dagwood Sandwich building contest. One could argue that both the honorable mention, Brave Boy, and the runner up, Dagwood, were more like the sandwich of the Blondie comic strip, Dagwood's Delight was the winner. And was much more palatable than the previous two. Still a ridiculous sandwich and it would've benefited from frying the ham and hot dogs. But it was tasty. Plussing it up with a little spicy brown mustard seemed entirely appropriate and was tasty as well.

Plus up(s): Madras curry powder
Plussed up rating: 7

From Dagwood's Delight to the Delightful Sardine Sandwich. Which, turns out, was delightful. All of the ingredients came together nicely and it wasn't overly fishy. Plussed it up with some Madras curry powder, which is spicier, darker, and more flavorful than regular curry powder, that worked with every single ingredient really well.

Revenge of the sieve! Started things out with a fine mesh sieve, then move to a much less fine sieve (strainer) but it was only once I grabbed the pestle from my molcajete was I able sieve enough ham to make the sandwich. Pain in the butt technique aside, it was an ok tasting sandwich. Plussing it up with a little melty Gruyere cheese and nutmeg definitely made it more flavorful and enjoyable.

a sandwich of our history

Ah yes, the Polish Breath Mint, as submitter Matt called it. Onion bun, onion cream cheese, salami, and raw onions. Very grandfather coded. Maybe it's because I'm getting on in years but I enjoyed it. Tried three different plus ups (which in hindsight would've been even better combined) one which put the pedal down with more onions. I dug 'em all.

International Sandwich Sunday

This was one of those international sandwiches that wasn't overly complex to make yet packed with flavor. Some folks expressed surprised to see beef featured in a sandwich from India. Which means I should've done a better job of setting context. This is from Goa which was under Portuguese rule/protection until 1961 (!). So the cuisine there is heavily influenced, though not entirely, by that. If you're curious to give it a go, this is the recipe I followed (The recipe doesn't specify what cut, just "boneless. I went with a Top Sirloin steak and it worked great.

In The Chips with Barry

These chips from the Netherlands were pretty ok. It's based of sausage that is fried and topped with onion, mayo, and sometimes a curry ketchup. Not sure I got all of those flavors but it was a alright savory chip flavor.

The only ding against these chips from Norway as size (then again, I am kinda big). Skin-on potatoes (and good flavor) with a nice balanced dill pickle flavor.

It is nice to know that 57 I can still experience new things. For example, the flavor combo of watermelon and jalapeño. I've several interesting combos featuring watermelon and feta, basil, balsamic vinegar, etc. but not this. Thankfully not overly sweet with a pretty nice jalapeño heat.

And that's a wrap on last week. Thanks for watching and reading. See you next week!

Cheers,
Barry
