Recap no cap
Super tasty sandwich action!

I'll see myself out.

First off, thank you to those who left comments on my question post. I really appreciate the feedback. I also took a look at the analytics for the past several recaps and it would seem the links to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Reddit, are not all that useful. Also, the company that host these recaps has indicated that the length of them means they get cut off and the dreaded "click here to see the entire email" which opens it up as a separte web page message is shown. So, with this recap I am going streamline a few things but no big changes. If you think I've gone too far, please drop me a note at barry@sandwichesofhistory.com and let me know how. I'd appreciate it.

Okay, on to the sandwiches!

Just for Two Cook Book 1903

Monday, May 11, 2026
Rating: 3
Plus up: Tomato, black, pepper, and chives
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2

Behold the power of tomato! Absorber of salt whether it be from actual salt or anchovy paste or, in this case, both! With the black pepper and chives it took this from an overly salted combo of nuts and cream cheese to something I actually want to eat again. Go figure!

The Calendar of Sandwiches and Beverages 1920

Tea sandwich rating: 8 1/2
Plus up: None

You might be tempted to argue that this one wasn't far off from the one on Monday. And you'd be right. After all, it feature Nefuchatel cheese (which is a lighter cream cheese) and nuts. But whereas the aforementioned sandwich opted for anchovy paste, this one did not. Plus, it called for chives in the recipe! It was a tasty tea sandwich which needed no plus up. The green food coloring wasn't really doing much for me but hey, I get it. 1920 wanted to be a little festive.

Miss Leslie’s Lady’s Receipt Book 1850

Wednesday, May 13, 2026
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Colman's mustard
Plussed up rating: 7

Were I better at making biscuits it might've scored even higher but this simple ham biscuit was tasty. Even more so with the bite of Colman's mustard. If I make this again will just used folded slices of ham instead of grinding (which I think they did as a way to use up the last bits of a ham that can be a bit tough).

The New Purity Cookbook 1967

Thursday, May 14, 2026
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Metled Swiss cheese
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2

Hard to imagine this not tasting pretty good. In fact in writing this, I've realized the scores were probably a half point too low. You've got the tender tongue with the bite of both mustard and horseradish that is somewhat tempered by mayonnaise. The plus up tasted good but was terribly neat to eat. Would just keep the tongue whole if I were to make it again.

The Sandwich Book 1964

Friday, May 15, 2026
Rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Chopped green onions and fried chili crisp
Plussed up rating: 7 1/2

This was the first time I've seen water chestnuts and soy sauce in a sandwich and I gotta say, I dug it. Some folks pointed out that the water chestnuts should've been chopped up a bit. If it were my recipe, I'd have to agree. But I did like the texture it brought along with the savoriness of the soy sauce. Plussed it up with slight bite of green onions and fried chili crisp for some heat. Again, I think the rating I gave on the original is a bit off. Should've been more like 6, 6 1/2.

A sandwich of our history

Saturday, May 16, 2026
Rating: 6 1/2
Plus up: Seasoned tomato and lettuce
Plussed up rating: 7

What is a cheeseburger without the cheeseburger? This! It had it all and was a pretty satisfying vegetarian sandwich. I would've like a little more cheese but still, solid sandwich.

International Sandwich Sunday

Sunday, May 17, 2026
Rating: 10
Plus up: None

I don't even now how to capture in words here just how delicious this was. The green papaya salad was was a brilliant contrast the flavor bomb that was the ground pork and pate. Soooo good!

In The Chips with Barry

Whenever I check out a meat flavored chip I am cautiously pessimistic. More often than not they do not stick the landing. These Smoked Pork Belly potato chips, unfortunately, were just mid.

I like Siete products in general. They are high quality. But if you're going to put out a potato chips with the name Fuego, it had better bring the heat. This, did not.

These oregano potato chips blew my mind. I like oregano enough but somehow on potato chips the flavor went to 11. Wish we had easily access to them here.

The first to flavors did ok. In fact, the fat of the butter did bring out a bit more flavor. But man, those oregano potato chips...good lord.

Well, that's a wrap (or sandwich?) on the week that was. As always, thank you for watching and reading!

Cheers,
Barry
