Finally, Sandwiches & Chips
I'm supposed to write a sub-headliner here but I got nothin'
Welcome back to another recap o' sandwiches and chips. I've been busy gearing up to be away from home for a month. First stop, Sandwiches of History: A Dining Experience in Paoli Wisconsin on April 29th and 30th. Basically sandwich tasting, cocktails, and a three course dinner inspired by sandwiches. The 30th is sold out but there are still tickets left for April 29th.
Then off to Brooklyn to host Sandwiches of History: One Tasty Night on May 6th. Sandwich tastings paired with potato chips and custom crafted cocktails and curated craft beer. All to raise funds for Brooklyn Org.
Then I might be heading to Vermont to do some collab filming, then off to a week long shoot for the day job. But fret not, for I have been banking episodes. So while I may be away from my kitchen for a month, you're still going to see a new old sandwich everyday!

Peanut Butter Club Sandwich (1944)
Mary Hunt’s Salad Bowl
Sandwich rating: 6
Plus up: Chinese five spice
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Not gonna lie, this was one of the odder iterations on a club sandwich that I've done. Despite having peanut butter in the name, it was the chopped olives, lemon mayonnaise, and orang marmalade that ran the tables. Which does not sound like it would work at all. Yet, with the peanut butter, it did. Plussed it up with the ole Chinese five spice as warm spices tend do a great job of bridging the sweet/savory ingredients.

Lettuce and Horseradish Sandwich Number 2 (1915)
“Dame Curtsey’s” Book of Salads, Sandwiches and Beverages
Tea sandwich rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Seasoned slice of tomato
Plussed up rating: 6
Finally, the great taste of lettuce meets the kick of horseradish? Yeah it was surprising to me to find not one but two recipes for this kind of sandwich. The original wasn't bad by any stretch but adding a seasoned slice of tomato was nice. Definitely a tea or snack sandwich though.

Poultry Sandwich (1877)
Practical Cooking
Sandwich rating: 5
Plus up: Ayoh! Foods Dill Pickle Mayo
Plussed up rating: 6
This was a pretty bare bones chicken sandwich. Heck, even the name is bare bones. While the recipe thankfully asked use to season the chicken, it was still a little dry. Enter the Ayoh! Foods Dill Pickle Mayo. Brough that nice dill pickle pop and much needed richness to the sandwich.

Hamburg Sandwich, American Style (1928)
The Wonder Sandwich Book
Sandwich rating: 6
Plus up: Dill pickle, blue cheese, and Dijon mustard | Peanut butter, sriracha, and basil
Plussed up rating: 8 |9
I need to dig into what the non-American style Hamburg Sandwich was in 1928. The original of this sandwich tasty, if not basic. The plus up possibilities were endless. And, admittedly, I went a little overboard with the first tangy plus up but both were super tasty. No regerts

Mushroom Sandwich (1919)
Manilla Cook Book
Sandwich rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: Nutmeg and melted Swiss cheese
Plussed up rating: 6 1/2
Talk about burying the lede. Sure, there were mushrooms in the Mushroom Sandwich but there was also tongue! Btw, folks have been asking how did I just happen to have tongue laying around? Well, I bought some cooked and sliced from Katz's Deli. I then portioned them out and froze them so I didn't have to do a week of tongue sandwiches. The plus up for this was a no brainer for me. A little warm spice in the form of nutmeg, sharp Dijon mustard and nutty, melted Swiss cheese.

Peanut Butter and Nasturtium Sandwich
A sandwich of our history
Sandwich rating: 5 1/2
Plus up: More nasturtium leaves and flowers plus mayonnaise
Plussed up rating: 6
I often see recipe for nasturtium sandwich in the old cookbook, particularly around the early 20th century. But they're all pretty much the same. Nasturtiums with mayonnaise or butter. Well, leave it to a sandwich of our history to shake things up. Peanut butter entered the chat. It was an interesting combo to have the nutty peanut butter matched with the peppery bit of nasturtiums. It did need a little richness so my plus up was a touch of mayonnaise.

Stron d’Poye (Belgium)
International Sandwich Sunday
Sandwich rating: 9
Plus up: Chinese five spice
Plussed up rating: 9 1/2
Hmm, used Chinese five spice as a plus up twice in one week. Note to self: you're slipping, old man. Lol This was absolutely delicious. Funky washed rind cheese with a concentrated, sweet, apple/pear/date syrup. So good. Brough in the five spice for the same reason as earlier in the week. And it worked like a charm. Arugula or fresh cracked black pepper would be some other, different ways to go.

In The Chips with Barry
Sweetened sweet potato Pringles knockoffs. Turned out to be pretty tasty.
A different approach to sweet and savory than the sweet potato chips above but also tasty.
Kind of like All Dressed cousin. Ifykyk
TL;DR Yes, yes they can sandwich.
Well, that it's for last week. Come on back next week for another scintillating recap! Thanks for watching and reading!
Cheers,
Barry
